“The developers of a west Oahu resort area have partnered with Tiger Woods on the design of one of two forthcoming golf courses, Pacific Links International announced this month.

It will be the first Woods-designed course in the Aloha State. His TGR Design company will be lead architects for one of the two courses going in at Makaha Valley Resort, the Makaha North Course, while Gil Hanse, creator of the Olympic Course in Rio de Janeiro, will head the design of the Makaha South Course. Both of the courses will be positioned as tournament-quality venues, according to the announcement.

The two courses will be the centerpiece of the Makaha Valley Resort, a 644-acre mixed-used property on Oahu that will include a hotel, and will be the first new course designs on Oahu since the Ernie Els-designed Hoakalei golf course opened a decade ago....”

For the past few years, Pacific Links sold off all of their US golf courses due to China government banning Chinese from travelling to outside of China for golf vacations as it is deemed elitist. I am surprised that Pacific Links is back to the US with investments. Maybe this is packaged as a timeshare development as opposed to golf travel.

A bit more background... Pacific Links sold expensive golf memberships to local Chinese in PRC, with the promise of letting them travel around the world to play at Pacific Links golf courses. Pacific Links bought a number of golf courses outside of China. About 4 years ago, PRC government said no dice, golf vacations are for the elites. Pacific Links then proceeded to sell off all non-China golf courses, the last which happened last year.

We were speculating that since Shan Shan Feng won the women's golf bronze medal at the Olympics Games that the Chinese government would relax their position. Who knows!? The PRC government continues to put pressure on their golfers, disallowing them to play in Taiwan.

Golf courses usually use recycled water on their courses, so not much impact.

I do wonder about the location. It is so far from everything else, but with a new or remodeled hotel it may be a nice destination for people.

Best regards.

I wouldn't worry about being far from everything else. Look at Ko Olina, you build great resorts and they will come.
