Hawaiian Airlines raises bag fees

HONOLULU — Hawaiian Airlines announced the price to check first and second bags on its flights between North America and Hawaii is rising by $5, to $30 and $40, respectively.

Hawaiian’s checked bag fee for neighbor island flying remains unchanged, as do discounts and complimentary allowances for HawaiianMiles members. Guests flying internationally on Hawaiian may still check two bags at no charge.

Hawaiian’s current North America bag fees, which were last revised in 2012, will remain in place for guests traveling on tickets purchased through Monday.

I flew on Southwest Airlines, their November magazine that is in the plane said they expect sometime within the next 2 months they'll begin taking reservations to Honolulu and a couple other airports. But, they will be flying out of California, meaning it will be a mandatory layover. Nothing will change, 2 checked and 2 carry-on.

Well I am not committed at this time one way or the other with Hawaiian or Southwest for Hawaii trips. The direct 11 hour flight from JFK leaving at 10:00 AM and getting there at 4:00 PM is great. We have flown from NY to Honolulu with 1 stop 17 hours, and 2 stops 19 hours so a layover is not necessary but getting to Hawaii at night is not our idea of ideal. However, paying for transfers, extra meals, and a hotel is also not ideal. From Long Island Islip Airport I know there will be at least 2 stops before the Pacific Ocean Crossing. I have over 200,000 Hawaiian Miles so it may be awhile before I would even consider Southwest unless they miraculously come up with some really good connections and prices.

I am willing to pay a bit more for better flight times or fewer connections.

The vacation really starts once you arrive at the resort..

I always say on Hawaiian Airlines, the Hawaiian Vacation starts when you get on the plane. The flight attendants have Hawaiian backgrounds and the Aloha spirit. We know a number of them personally and have even partied with them in Honolulu and stayed at one of their cottages in Hilo. Of course with the direct flight we are with them for 11 hours, and even 2 meals, and a glass of wine or two, so it is a little party even in coach.

I wonder when it will get to the point where it's cheaper to ship your stuff to Hawaii in a big box.

We send home a least 1 large box each you. They weight about 50+ pounds. I costs over $100 for the slowest US. Post Office method. Therefore, bags one and two at $30 and $40 are still a good deal. d
