For the life of me, I can’t understand why Canadian Geese are protected. Nene’s, fine, if there’s only 1200 but Canadian geese seem to outnumber squirrels and are a h*** of a lot more dirty.

If memory serves, Nene are a subspecies of Canada Goose that got sidetracked in Hawaii and never left. They need to be protected.

The smart aleck in me says they should be trained to stay away from people. Kind of like how they should move those Deer Crossing signs to areas where there are fewer cars...

When my sister in law first saw a monk seal on the beach in Kauai, she wanted to know how they knew to come into the area that was roped off.

When my sister in law first saw a monk seal on the beach in Kauai, she wanted to know how they knew to come into the area that was roped off.

When we were at Gillin's Beach a few years ago a juvenile monk seal came ashore. But he/she was actively seeking out people, wanting to play with them. When people moved away, the seal would follow. When the seal came on shore, he/she was actively interacting with people - not at all aggressively.

Then some folks who were out kite-surfing came in and roped off the the area. They were part of a volunteer force trained for such things - they set up the initial protections and call notify wildlife services.
