All,

I'm looking at Lagunamar for a future September trip, and am curious how rainy it is? The internet suggests it's one of the rainier months of the year, but I've seen situations where much of the rainfall occurs overnight, or late afternoon.

Does anyone have any personal experience with Lagunamar in September? Thanks very much!

Best,

Greg

In the hotter months, afternoon showers are welcome. Your only issue is that you are at the beginning of hurricane season. A large tropical storm is a bit different than typical afternoon showers.

Either way it’s gonna be muggy. Think Florida hot.

Not just rain, but tropical systems like this are frequent on the Yucatan Peninsula this time of year. I just clipped this image from the National Hurricane Center 10-6-2018. You don't want to be there during a hurricane. I suggest at the very least get trip insurance. When hurricane Wilma devastated Florida several years ago, the hurricane stuck over Cancun as a CAT 5 for 3 days before crossing the Gulf to hit us. It hit us on 10/22.We were without power for 2 weeks. We had $95,000 damage to our house, and it was a CAT 3 when it hit us.

This was what the beach at Lagunamar looked like after the hurricane. The erosion was so bad you couldn't even get to the water until the lifeguards cut little ramps down these cliffs to get there.

We have gone in September twice to Lagunamar and have not had any tropical storm issues. It did rain usually every morning about 7 am and then again in the late afternoon/evening, both lasting about an hour each. It was very hot, though! Hot and humid!!!

It is October though, not September. Of course any time of the year, from about mid August to the end of October you have a chance of a storm impacting your stay. Though chances at any given time of a storm actually impacting your actual stay is fairly low, but there is always the chance and the worry.

according to this site you should not be too worried about major hurricanes in Cancun, only 2 since 1988, 17 years apart. Of course travel insurance is advisable still.

HURRICANE SEASON IN CANCUN & THE RIVIERA MAYA
PUBLISHED: OCT 3rd

rainy-day-Riviera-Maya.jpg

You want to plan a vacation to Cancun or the Riviera Maya, but you are worried about the weather. Will it rain? Will there be a hurricane? Will it be sweltering hot? Cold? We never know for sure, but here is a general explanation of the weather in Cancun and the Riviera Maya that can help you plan your vacation.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th, but most hurricanes occur August through October. The chances that a hurricane will hit during your vacation are very low. The Cancun area has only been hit by two major hurricanes: Gilbert on September 15, 1988 and Wilma on October 21, 2005, 17 years apart.

The best precaution you can take, just in case a hurricane does occur, is to purchase trip insurance.

Rain

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall…it can rain anytime in the Riviera Maya, but rain in the forecast often means a passing shower that lasts just a few minutes, or it might rain in Playa del Carmen, but be sunny in Cancun.

Here is a graph of the Average Monthly Rainfall in Cancun (www.holiday-weather.com)

Average-Rainfall-Cancun.jpg

If it does happen to rain during your vacation, don’t despair! Hacienda Tres Rios always offers plenty of rainy day activities.

Temperature

In general, January is the coolest month and July is the hottest month.

Here is a graph of the Average Monthly Temperature in Cancun (www.holiday-weather.com)

Average-Temp-Cancun.jpg

No matter what the weather is like during your trip, remember that you are on vacation. You can relax and you don’t have to go to work, so enjoy yourself, and if you don’t like the weather, don’t worry, wait five minutes and it will probably change!

did it not actually start in Cancun?

The tropical system accumulated just a bit south of Cancun in the Caribbean Sea and quickly became a tropical storm off the coast of Cancun, then headed north and made landfall in Florida as ALMOST a CAT 5, one of the WORST HURRICANES IN HISTORY!

As the data posted above indicates, September and October are the WORST times to be there. It will be hot, and humid, and miserable. THAT is when the tropical systems occur. Notice the rainfall chart- there's a reason for that. Think about what an average of 220 inches of rain means.

The rainfall chart is in millimeters, not inches. That September and October average is approximately 9 inches of rain each month.

We have been in Sept and in August these last 2 years and had great vacations. We mainly did water activities during the day and went out in the evenings. Rain was only for brief periods of time and the sun was back out. The only day that was rough was a trip to x-caret, our guests wanted to spend a day there ,never again in the heat. There are great deals for Aug through Oct. We used accomadation certificates for a 1 bedroom. Would do it again in a heartbeat

Dean is not listed as a major hurricane in Cancun on website above.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_Hurricane_Dean_in_Mexico

Back in 2007, we were deciding whether to go to Aruba or Cancun in August of 2007. We decided to go to Aruba since it is outside the hurricane belt. Dean hit near Cancun the week we were in Aruba. We had rain one night and high surf for a day in Aruba. I would go back to Aruba if I was going in September.

While there may only be two hurricanes that have hit there, that doesn't mean there hasn't been significant impact from a hurricane or tropical storm. Those statistics usually only refer to direct hits when the storm is a named hurricane. The chance of a direct eyewall hit of a hurricane in any given area at any given time, even during peak season, is less than 1%. That doesn't mean though that a storm can't impact your stay, even if it hits a hundred miles away or more.

I can tell you this - the large pool that was supposed to be finished by the end of September, will NOT BE OPEN until the end of October. WHY?? Because they got TOO MUCH RAIN IN SEPTEMBER!

it is possible. but this was on Mexican Standard time so the re-opening could have been delayed by a year for a million other reasons or no reason at all.

We just spoke to the resort, and rain is the reason they give for the delay.

But wait, there's more! The rain is one thing, but the winds and storms cause other issues. The staff at Lagunamar is telling us there is a huge sea weed problem since Michael passed by. No, they didn't get a direct hit by a hurricane, but they are suffering from the after affects. These storms churn up the water, which is never calm at Lagunamar to begin with.

As far as i can find, Dean produced no damage in Cancun except few broken branches.

Keep in mind the impact of climate change and global warming. Cancun is a manmade beach that may need expensive annual upkeep going forward.

https://www.pri.org/stories/2013-11-11/fortune-made-sand-how-climate-change-destroying-cancun

As I have said before, the chances of a hurricane hitting any one place in a given year is small. Look at the Florida Panhandle. Statistically, Hurricane Michael was an anomaly. However, with climate change, weather patterns are changing so looking at the past may not be the best indicator of the future anymore. Miami has only had one major hurricane in the past 50 years but it is threatened by hurricanes almost every year. Every year, the locals are worried about whether this year will be the year they get hit again. The flooding from heavy rain is worse than a hurricane these days.

Certain places have a higher probability of getting hurricanes, although any one city may not get hit head on. Florida and the Caribbean have had many hurricanes as a whole as well as impact from many tropical storms that have not reached hurricane status. I generally avoid planning travel to Florida and the Caribbean from August through October. If I do plan travel to a high risk place, I definitely buy travel insurance. These days, I almost always buy travel insurance anyway since anything can happen anytime.

Dean was bad. I had a friend in Cancun during Dean. She and her family were locked in a hotel scared for their lives. Have you ever been in a hurricane?

Did you read the Wikipedia page about Dean? People were killed and it caused a lot of damage.

I do not see any recent reports of weed problems on tripadvisor. People seem to be as happy as they have always been at Lagunamar. Pictures show the normal gorgeous beach. I will be there in few days and report back.

I was in Orlando during a hurricane many, many years ago. Being scared and being hurt or suffering from damages are 2 very different things. I will go with the official reports.

Did you read the Wikipedia page about Hurricane Dean in Mexico? People were killed and it caused a lot of damage. People being scared for their lives matters a lot to me. How can you discount that? Why do you defend Cancun to no end even against the facts?
