We’re traveling to Kauai in December for a week and I’m thinking about surprising the kids with a trip over to Oahu for a night. What is the best way to rent a unit at Aulani for a single night?

Are you talking about Christmas week? Because if you are the pickings might be slim. What date are you looking for? What size accommodations? Which view would you like?

Be aware that Aulani has a 4 pm check-in time and 10 am check-out time. It hardly seems worth it to drive to Ko Olina from Honolulu Airport HNL for a night.

We are thinking about going the night of 12/21 to surprise the girls for Chrismas. Online it say check in is 4pm however you can check in anytime but your room will not be ready until then. I was looking at flights from LIH to HNL I can get in around 8am and fly out the following evening at 7pm. I figured as long as we stay the night we should be able to utilize the facilities the entire time. We are just looking for a studio unit.

I wouldn't fly over for the one night at $140-180 pp RT plus the room. What I might do would be to fly in or out of HNL and take a couple of nights at Aulani.

I think the OP meant that they’d fly into HNL from LIH and then the next evening fly from HNL to their local mainland Airport. At least, that’s the only way I’d even think of doing this.

Hopefully but as written, that's not what the OP says. I'd only do it at the beginning or end of a trip, not back and forth to an island.

Much to my surprise I see availability for a studio on Dec 21st though not later in the week - I'd grab it before it disappears (assuming you have DVC points). If you don't have DVC points go to one of the many DVC rental sites such as http://www.dvcrequest.com/ and https://dvcrentalstore.com/ as soon as possible and put in a request. If it disappears before you can get it then you can likely go to Disney's website and rent it like a hotel room...but it will be expensive.
