Flying with Children

When booking seats for a child, what do you need to show as identification? We will be flying with my granddaughter who is two next year and I wonder what we will need to make the reservation, check-in and board.

Good question. When we flew with minor children (ours are 27 and 29 now) we didn't need to show anything.

When booking the ticket you shouldn't need any id, assuming you are doing the booking online. You might want to check with the airline you book with to see if they have any requirements to show id for the child when you board. If you are flying internationally I think the child, even at two, needs a passport which would serve as id.

Make sure you book the airfare with yours and not separate from yours. That is the only thing I know from booking our grandkids.

FYI - This is not required but, if the parents of the children are not flying with you, you should also get notarized statements from them identifying (via drivers license or passport number) you are authorized to travel from Point A to Point B on dates such and such. Airline employees are required to report suspected child trafficking situations. These forms tend to help you through the boarding process if questioned by a gate agent or flight attendant.

I'd have a notarized letter from BOTH parents, it'll be required for a cruise or stopping out of the US for some situations. Sometimes people use these options to "get away".

I agree with this, and think that at a minimum, you should call the airline in question's Customer Service, and get the official statement from them. TUGgers have great info and delight in sharing it, but we can't have the latest information- especially on things that could really wreak havoc on your vacation.
