Hi all,
I've heard about TUG for years, and am a little intimidated to post. Y'all have a very good rep, so I know I'll get some no-nonsense, frank advice. Thanks in advance.
We own a couple DVC contracts (both resales), but I've shied away from other timeshares. Now my husband is interested in more regular vacations in Colombia, where he spent time as a kid (his parents were Colombian). He wants to buy a small condo, but I think a time share is really more what we should do - less responsibility. So here goes with my survey.
1) Is there a vacation destination you wish to visit most of the time or on a regular basis? if so where?
Colombia - primarily Cartagena and Medellin
2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
Home resort, if we can figure out the best one for us in Cartagena.
3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
Well, Colombia, and probably apart from that, we'd favor US, Canada and Centra/South America destinations.
4) How many people do you usually travel with?
Right now it's just my husband and I. We have a 21 yo son, who at some point when he has a family might start traveling with us again, but a max of two rooms would suffice, I think.
5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
We're very flexible. Probably most interested in summer travel, though, to get away from the summer heat in Tennessee.
6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
Yes, I think so.
7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
Probably.
8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
I would say 3-4. We like Old Key West at DVC -- is that 3-4?
9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
We would not finance. I'm not sure how to even answer that, as I only know DVC pricing.
10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
$600? We could definitely do $50 a month. Probably more.
11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Yes!
12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
Yes. I'm spoiled by owning DVC (we had three contracts and sold one in under 24 hr). I'm a little unsure about resale of other timeshare properties.
