At home here we are transitioning from our winter clothes to lighter Spring fabrics. Some days have been in 70’s. I see the weather next week in Cardiff is going to be in the 50’s, maybe 60's. That would be the weather I'm used to in winter on Hilton Head. But it's a beach town atmosphere. We've had a cold snap where it's been in 40's and 50's with rain which chills me to the bones.

Are people wearing layers of their Spring-type clothing or are they still wearing heavier fabrics like corduroy? I don't want to feel like a clothing misfit  My daughter and I will be going through Brecon Beacons and probably doing a bit of hiking near a glacial pond. Is this considerably colder in the Park with the elevation?

No matter the time of year when we travel to Wales, Scotland, or Ireland we pack layers so that we are always prepared.

It's Wales, it'll be wet. The Brecon Beacons aren't particularly colder however if hiking the mountains be aware that weather conditions can change dramatically, one moment you could be surrounded by gorgeous sunshine the next shrouded in low cloud, rain and near freezing temperatures. The Brecon Beacons claim a number of lives of inexperienced and ill prepared hikers, hiking them shouldn't be a casual affair undertaken with a laissez fair attitude (not suggesting you are BTW) so ensure that you're properly and well prepared.

Where else are you going? I'd love to hear more about your planned itinerary, and I hope you'll report back afterwards.

We're a few weeks behind you, maybe - starting at Barnsdale in Oakham, then thru Peak District, several days in Snowdonia, then Pembrokeshire coast (return trip - last one was also June, and it rained most every day but still beautiful), back thru Brecon Beacons, to Historic Dockyard Chatham (Call the Midwife tour!!) and home again. We'll probably overnite in both Peak District and Brecon Beacons which are (sort of) on our way to next stop, so we can take in at least a couple hours hiking.

And thanks for your info, Pompey Family, always appreciated.

Quilter, here are 2 blog posts for you, by someone who has posted the following:

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR DAY HIKE IN THE BRECON BEACONS?
The weather can quickly change when you are hiking in the Brecon Beacons (or anywhere in the UK). It’s best to be prepared with warm and waterproof gear. Also, good hiking boots are essential to make sure you have a great day out. And look after the most important part!

Read my full guide on what to pack for your day hike including what to wear.

Just assume it will be cool/wet/damp. Pack with layers. An outside waterproof shell that you can use for rainy days. Under that pack a polar fleece shell or vest. That will keep you warm. My neck is always cold so pack several scarves. Both warm and light. Socks. Don't think you will need a hat but my outer waterproof shell has a hood. Footwear should include one pair of waterproof shoes. Enjoy!
