We are going to the Bay Club at Waikoloa in June and just wanted to pass on a tip here that I got from the Hawaii forum in case it is helpful to HGVC owners as well. Rental prices (at least through Costco) seem to be dropping quite a bit on the Big Island and so far I have rebooked twice in the last two days for less than our original booking (also with a class upgrade). So if anyone is going to any of the HGVC Waikoloa resorts in the next few weeks and renting a car, you may want to recheck your rental rates.

Maybe the Volcano is scaring a few tourists away from the island which is fine by us!

I booked a full size through National. A few days before we left I ran through the car booking again. I couldn't get a lower rate, but I was able to get a premium for the same price. We ended up with a BMW 430i convertible.

Just "rebooked" again today... down another $30 on a 10-day reservation today....so far have saved $75 off the original 10-day reservation.

My sister works for United and she's flying out next week. She says all the flights are empty. People have canceled/change their plans. Good time to get discounts.

I'd be concerned about airport closures. Hilo seems likely, and Kona is certainly a possibility.

Cheers.

Landed here yesterday and staying at Kings Land....things seem busy at the airport and at the resort. Volcano Natl Park closed again yesterday at 3pm though. Air quality is ok, a little VOG and light rain last night.

We were at Black Sand Beach today and we could see some VOG as we drove to the area but it seemed to remain in the distance at higher elevations. The air was clear at Punaluu Beach and fine everywhere else on the island...we put almost 500 miles on the car in two days....Leaving tomorrow for Oahu.

Hope thus is helpful,
CiCi

LATEST: Big Island officials say misinformation is triggering visitor cancellations
http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/...arns-about-ash-falling-in-parts-of-big-island

When we left Kings Island yesterday, other than the Volcano National Park, everything was open.

There was a little bit of Vog right near the park, but outside of that, everything was fine. We spent Saturday in Hilo with absolutely zero issues. The resorts were busy, the airport was busy, the restaurants were busy as were all the tourist spots.

Mahalo!!
