Do I need a rental car in Las Vegas?

We are going to Tahiti Village later this week on a II trade. We have never been to Las Vegas before, so I was wondering if anyone might have a recommendation on whether or not we really need a rental car? Can we just use their shuttle to get around on the strip? Are the taxi's reasonable, if we just want to go that route?
Thanks much for any help!

Do you NEED a car? No. Would it be a good idea to have one? Yes. Tahiti Village is not walking distance to anything but the Denny's downstairs, pretty much. Oh, and probably to the outlet mall. I'd get the car so I didn't have to depend on the once an hour shuttle, which could turn out to already be full when I wanted it. Besides, there are so many things to do and places to go. I have directions to avoid the worst of the traffic, email me a week or so ahead and I can help you that way.

Rental cars are very inexpensive in Vegas and Tahitti village is out near the airport, several miles from the start of "The Strip".

I've heard from others here that the shuttle isn't very reliable and can be somewhat frustrating. I've used the municiple bus (CAT) & the strip bus (DUCE) and if you can figure the schedule out and aren't pressed for time you can get back and forth with these options. A cab ride from the airport to the Hilton, (other end of the strip near the convention center) is about $20.

That said, a car makes things much more convienent and parking is generally free in most of Las Vegas.

Since we always drive to Vegas, I am probably not the best resource. But having said that, I can't imagine not having a car. There is a lot more to Vegas than the Strip and seeing it by car is the best alternative in my opinion.

Actually, I believe it's only 2 miles south of Mandalay Bay rather than several miles. Still MB is the far south end of the strip.

As others have mentioned, a car should make your life easier. You can come and go as you please without having to follow a shuttle bus schedule. Getting back using by taxi might be easier than getting to the strip by taxi. That's because there's always taxi lines at the casino's but getting one called down to TV could be difficult unless one just happens to be in that area. Taxi drivers don't like dead end fares where they can't pick someone up when they drop someone off. They prefer to stay around the hotels where there's always someone waiting to be picked up once they've dropped their last fare off. They're not into driving an empty cab 2 miles south of the strip to pick someone up to drop back off on the strip.

Keep in mind that taxi's in Vegas are amoung the highest in the country as far as fare's go. They might seem reasonable to most because most never really go that far but, they're not cheap IMO. You can easily spend more than a rental car would cost you in cab fare's in the period of one week.

The shuttle bus is nice because it's free. Once on the strip you probably won't need a car much. The problem with a shuttle bus is you have to follow it's schedule. If everyone at TV is utilizing the shuttle, then you could have to stand and wait for the next run if the shuttle is full (never heard of that happening). I'm not a big fan of having to be standing and waiting based on a shuttle bus schedule so I prefer to have the car.

If it were me, I'd get the car.

Hertz. Avis. National. Enterprise. Alamo. Dollar. Budget. Etc.

We need a rental car any time we vacation in Las Vegas.

We tried it 1 time without renting a car.

That's how we learned we do need a car.
