This would still be a car rental but I've seen some post that Turo is a good alternative altho others have said that those rental rates don't usually include the damage protection that "normal" car rental companies offer.

If you haven't already booked your tickets, there is also an airport on HHI directly.

You will want a car on HH. There are some car rental locations in downtown Savannah that were significantly less than the airport location when I was looking back in the fall. Sure it is inconvenient to take an Uber to that location, but if money is a big deal, you will save money. Look at the rental locations on HH also, the math may lead you to an Uber to the island or a one way pick up in Savannah and drop off at the HH rental location.

My big advice, is to not overcomplicate your situation over a hundred dollars.

@Big Matt Also great idea Uber to off airport car rental as likely waaaaaaay less of a line at those off sites.

I've used Turo a couple of times,. Basically AirBnB for vehicles. I use them when I want a type of vehicle that isn't guaranteed or even available through the traditional car rental agencies. You can purchase additional protection through them.

@sponger76 with the additional protection how does that price compare to traditional car rentals?

It's honestly all over the place. Sometimes Turo is a lot cheaper and other times more expensive. Tends to be cheaper with your regular everyday vehicles, more expensive when you start getting into the fancy stuff. But because prices are set by the individual owners, you can find great deals at times.

I like the vibe of curbside pickup with Turo...beats the 4 hour Budget line we stood in once at HHI (we should have been better prepared)

It can be different for each individual rental. Some will do curbside, some want you to come to them. I had one where the vehicle was sitting in the airport lot at SLC with the keys in it, and they had me leave it the same way.

@sponger76 Would you say all your Turo experiences have been at least average?

Yeah, no major issues so far, knock on wood. But again it's not something I do every trip. I prefer the predictability/safety of major car rental companies, and only do Turo for specific needs, such as AWD or 4WD drive for winter trips in the mountains.

The airport parking lot was how we did Turo on our visit to Colorado last month. It was fine, but a little more work than going to the rental car company window/lot. But because we wanted a spacious minivan, the difference in price between Turo and Avis was meaningful. It wasn't the newest model or the nicest car, but it worked great for our purposes and all in all we had a good experience. For a longer-term rental in a larger car, we think Turo is the way to go.

Total pass on any "protection" Turo offers; the insurance offered through our credit card is more than adequate.

Be careful with that. Most credit card-provided travel insurances do NOT cover rentals through Turo.
I had read that somewhere as well but did not check ours yet

Amex has a rental insurance plan for credit card holders that is a supplement to the normal coverage offered by usig an Amex card. It does require signing up separately before renting a vehicle. Not sure if it would cover Turo. I use the coverage because it is inexpensive, is primary coverage for loss or damage to a rental vehicle. No problem with coverage for "out of service" issues that can occur. Link is below. This is not an affiliate link. It is the same link you would find with Google.

Yes, but do they define Turo as a car rental or as car-sharing? Most CCs say the second, and won't cover it.

ETA: if you click on the terms it says: Coverage is not available for ride-sharing companies that allow individuals to rent out their personal vehicle.

Looks like it would not provide coverage for a company like Turo. I have not used Turo in the past and I am not familiar with renting a car that way. As an aside, I have used Uber/Lyft from HHI to Savannah airport. I have also flown into HHH airport and used Uber/Lyft to get to the resort. I balance the cost of a ride against the difference in fare and also the convenience of flying into HHH. Hope you have a great trip.

@emeryjre Would be interested in your strategy to get around HHI once at your resort...or do you pretty much stay put? Or do you rent a car on HHI?

The other part of the group was coming in later. They had the car. I do not believe it would be a fun trip to HHI without a vehicle. Everything is scattered around the Island.
