We just got an exchange to St Kitts. For anyone that has gone, can you give me some tips on what to do on the island? Should we rent a car? Any interesting places to visit on the island? How far is the Marriott from the airport, and are their taxis available?

We've enjoyed a number of trips to St. Kitts. Looking forward to another visit in February. The people there are wonderful, the island isn't over built - I've heard it called "old Caribbean".

St. Kitts is wonderful to visit in our view- in some ways because there isn't an overabundance of things to do. Instead, we can more fully relax when we get there. It is DWs favorite vacation club.

Responding to your questions:

Here are some suggestions of what to do (from our experiences)
Go to the Brimstone Hill fortress
Do a scenic train tour
Spend a day in Nevis
Take a catamaran sail trip
Check out some other beaches - Cockleshell, South Friars come to mind
Visit Shipwreck Bar (and maybe see some monkeys!) & Grill and Reggae Beach Bar & Grill (not on the same day!!)
Do some limin'

There are some nice restaurants around. We've enjoyed Marshall's and Serendipity, but others would have their great suggestions to add. I'd recommend a bit of immersion and head out to Sprat Net for some food and music one evening.

I would strongly recommend avoiding the steak and Italian restaurants on site. The Bohemia grill is nice for lunch though. We've also enjoyed some pizza from the shack most trips. If its within your taste, check out the shacks on the "other side" (Its not that long a walk).

We've decided against renting a car each time so far. I know we're certainly not interested in driving back from Shipwreck or Reggae Beach! Taxis are abundant (although they have gone up in price notably over the last 5 years or so). There should be plenty of taxis at the airport. Its about a 10 minute ride. If you find a taxi driver you are comfortable with, they'll (likely) be quite happy to give you a card and support your travel needs throughout your visit and be just a call away.

Folks have discussed the seaweed at the beach as a negative. Honestly, has been there most of our visits. They have a tractor that cleans up the beach daily. Some (and maybe a bit more than "some") seaweed at the beach doesn't bother us at all. But I do respect that it bothers others more than us.

I know others have great experiences to share.

Rush Slowly!

Thank you for your response. You have given me some great information. Is the seaweed always there. or does it depend on the winds and time of year? Not knowing the island at all, what is bad about driving from Shipwreck or Reggae Beach?

We have stayed at the St Kitts resort over the years in every month from October through May and never experienced the Sargassum seaweed problem.
It is primarily an issue for the Summer months.
We have hired a car here and had no problems driving all over the island.
Having said that, the taxi drivers are great, very friendly and with not unreasonable prices, so we also tend to just use them on more recent visits.

Honestly I haven't tracked the time of year or winds. I think we primarily go in the Spring and/or Fall.

Driving statement based on the fact that we have a great time, and don't want to drive afterwards. Nothing to do with the roads or drivers.

Did you rent a car from the airport, or at the Marriott?

Our last rental was some years back now and from the Hertz desk at the resort, if that is still there?
That is because we were on a long stay, so we only wanted a car for part of our trip.
We have since been recommended to https://www.bullseyecarrental.com/ and may well use them on future trips.

Thanks for starting the thread vlapinta, and all the great information from everyone. We are heading there Thanksgiving week. What is a reasonable price from the airport to the resort? Anyone done scuba dive or windsurfing while there? Thanks.

We have only snorkelled in St Kitts, especially good at Shitten Bay.
However, you can get more information on scuba diving from these companies

I don't remember the precise cost of the taxi from the airport to the Marriott, but it was reasonable, and it was fixed price. No matter which cab you got, that was the price.

We did a private 6 hour tour, we shared a small van with four other people, and it was a great day. The driver was knowledgeable and we saw pretty much the whole island in one day. It was not that expensive, maybe $100 per person. I think they also offer half-day tours.

If you search on TripAdvisor and Viator you can probably find various tours and lots of recommendations.

We have never rented a car when we’ve gone there. We always just use the taxis because as someone else said they’re not terribly expensive, if you’re drinking, who wants to drive on the left-hand side of the road coming home.o_O

We enjoy walking up the volcano, Mt. Liamuiga. However, ask around, last time we went the trail seemed abandoned and in disrepair. And it was never great. Some areas require a scramble. And try to tour Romney Manor

We'll see ya there!! Flying in on Wednesday and leaving Sunday. Just adults, or kids coming on the trip too? I'll have my 14 and 9y.o. daughters in tow.

Last time we were there (8-10 years ago), they had great zip lining, too. Very beautiful over the tops of the trees. And we can second the vote for Shipwreck, nice beach bar, raft and plenty of monkeys to wreak a little havoc!

There are tennis courts, but last time we were there (late last year) they were being used to store materials for the pool remodel.

That depends on the view designation associated with your reservation.
There is Ocean Side, Ocean View and Garden View.
There are also Internal and External units, with different layouts - we prefer external
We own Garden View External, which are on the lower floors but some still have a glimmer view of the ocean and all are close to it anyway.
The very best options are the huge 3 Bed too floor units, probably in Westbury or Palmetto Houses.
