Local news reports 70 ships queued up to unload in Long Beach, taking a week in line to get to the dock. I can see them all the way south of the Huntington Beach pier. Truckers are reporting storage yards full at the rail head inland.

Its interesting how supply chain logistics have been completely thrown off by the pandemic consumer purchasing habits, in addition to the labor shortages.

I do not see cargo ships waiting in the ports of Hampton Roads Virginia.

Send them to the Hampton Roads Ports. The channels are very deep.

That's because most of the Far East shipping companies have contracts exclusively with West Coast ports and the supply chains (warehouses, railroads, trucking companies, etc). So it's not as easy as "just send the ship to Norfolk or Newport News"...

That's the simple, high level answer.

Could Hampton Roads ports handle the traffic? They have the infrastructure, and the deep ports, but they aren't really set up for the sheer volume, including warehousing and trucking

Also, only 1 of the 2 East Coast Railroads have direct Double Stack Capacity from Hampton Roads to Chicago, that's NS. They have a pretty direct route from Norfolk to Chicago via Roanoke and Columbus. CSX could in theory do double stacks, but they would have to go Newport News to Chicago via either Atlanta or DC, so NS has the best route for Double Stacks. CSX has a very direct route from NPN to Chicago via Charleston, WV and Cincinatti but it's cleared only for Single stacks, so not as efficient and would take about another day transit time over CSX vs NS.

Feds order California pipeline to shut down indefinitely as investigators probe whether ship's anchor dragged pipe and caused 126,000-gallon oil spill
  • Officials with the US Coast Guard determined that the pipeline had suffered a 13-inch gash and was dragged 100 feet across the ocean floor
  • Preliminary reports suggest the spill may have been 'caused by an anchor that hooked the pipeline, however that theory remains under investigation
  • Approximately 126,000 gallons of highly-viscous oil spilled into the ocean
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projects the greatest threat to the shore remains between Huntington and Laguna Beaches
  • As of Tuesday, 4,788 gallons of crude oil has been recovered, 11,360 feet of containment boom has been deployed and 328 personnel are on scene assisting
  • At least eight oiled wildlife have been recovered

California Coast Guard boards German cargo ship to probe whether its anchor ruptured pipeline and caused 144K gallon oil spill as it idled off coast due to supply chain crisis
  • The Coast Guard is looking into whether the anchor of a cargo ship struck and dragged the pipeline responsible for California's oil spill
  • One ship, the Rotterdam Express, appeared to make a series of odd movements near the pipeline where the leak took place, according to GPS tracking
  • Hapaq-Lloyd, which owns the ship, has denied that the ship passed over the pipeline with its anchor
  • Marine navigation service MarineTraffic says the movements indicated for ships were incorrect, and may have resulted from errors in the ship's GPS system
  • It was anchored amid 61 cargo ships waiting to enter the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports on Friday

The Airshow was cancelled the last day and beaches closed for a week. Now the concern is the long term affects to the wetlands and coast.

Maybe, just MAYBE, somebody needs to come to grips that the 'Job Creators' can't just wave their magic wands and *poof* everybody shows up for work. Workers need child care. Workers need days off (my Kroger produce dude has worked 20 days straight). Workers need a living wage. Yes, ports can process containers very efficiently, but if there are no trucks or chassis to take those 'tin cans' to their destinations, they just sit there, piled ever deeper. Oh, sure, they can activate the National Guard, but the military tractors are not viable to haul civilian chassis, and National Guard soldiers have civilian jobs too. If they have to play soldier to deliver freight boxes, who's gonna do their regular job?

I don't have answers to a help wanted sign outside nearly every business, $12/hr McDonalds jobs, and 4.8% unemployment. I have a hunch that at least SOME of those immigrants would LOVE to go to work in the US, but there are those who (mistakenly) think they will take jobs loyal Americans should clamber to take. Like picking crops, milking cows, working midnight shifts.

Good Luck waiting for those Christmas toys, microchips and clothes from Asia.

This... all day.

The "cake and eat it too" crowd is in full denial about all this.

maybe Walmart. Fedex and UPS employees will work more overtime hours or get paid more
which may increase costs and inflation ....

Maybe Walmart will conscript employees, forced labor is coming, led by the pillars of big business.

Hopefully, this will encourage more onshore production to avoid shortages and high shipping costs. However, a dramatic increase in corporate income taxes will drive more business offshore.

I suggest buying a bidet for toilet paper shortages. They are available at Costco in the store. I love mine. I am buying three more, so get there quickly!
