Is this going to be another reason for retail shortages and more increases in retail prices for the holidays.

That's the simple answer. What happens to the countries that produce those goods? What good does it do to produce goods that can't be shipped? This the stuff that global recessions are made of.

I'm amazed that that pileup only represents a 5 day delay

Some big companies in Great Britain are chartering whole large container ships just for their goods.

Time to start buying American made goods or at least North American made Canada & Mexico " land routs" made goods. or consider resale or Etsee, ebay ect.

If they can hire enough workers to make and handle the goods....

Need more Long Haul Truck Drivers.
Be careful the trucking industry have partner with private industry to develop a long haul truck with no drivers. Everything is done electronics at a base station. Several long distance trucks with no drivers have already been tested and have carried their payload thousands of miles safetly.. They can park their vehicle, read road maps, avoid traffic problems and do not need to take driver truck's rest breaks. These trucks can drive all day and nights with no employee benefits.

Minor correction, the test drives on public roads have been with babysitter drivers for safety. Fully autonomous vehicles aren't legal yet.

Right, just like bank tellers and grocery cashiers, some jobs are going or have already been replaced by machines/robots and automation.

And the buying public cheers the expected price savings from these innovations, until the price savings never come and they are scanning and bagging their own groceries. Then their jobs get automated. Eventually, there will be a glut of goods being automatically produced and distributed for a public that can't buy them.

And all these self driving trucks do not exceed the speed limit for trucks.

Send them to the Hampton Roads Ports. The channels are very deep.

This has been the view on the way to my children’s school. As I understand, the Port is working only 2 shifts. It is not a 24/7 port as other global ports are. Also I don’t agree it’s truly about lack of qualified applicants.
