Spinoff from the Harry Potter thread. What movie characters are your favorite villains?

Some of my thoughts off the top of my head. With time I could probably come up with some more. I'm not into slasher movies, so characters such as Freddie Kruger won't make my list.
  • Robert Mitchum as Reverend Harry Powell in Night of the Hunter. (Hard to imagine a more chilling character.)
  • Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
  • Kathleen Turner as Matty Tyler Walker in Body Heat.
  • Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek !!.
  • Gian Maria Volanté as El Indio in For a Few Dollars More. (Thought about Lee van Cleeve as Angel Eyes in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but I had to go with El Indio as the more despicable. The psychology of the musical watch is just more compelling.)
  • Delores Umbridge from the Harry Potter movies. With Voldemort, there is some reason to understand his evil, and the evil that he does usually (but not always) has some purpose. Delores Umbridge is simply nasty because of the psychological pleasure she derives from being nasty.

In recent times I'm thinking Walter White aka Heisenberg.

Well, if you're going to go all Walter White on us, how about Cersei Lannister or Joffrey Baratheon?

I don't like mean hearted villain's so Cersei and Joffrey are out for me. Albert Johnson is another semi-villain I like.

I have a lot of favorite movies (and now series) over a wide range of varieties.
Ironic, but my wife and I have recently been discussing that you know an actor must be brilliant
when he/she can make you HATE & DESPISE them with such a great deal of passion in such a short period of time.
And we began to name names, so.........

Flora Robson** (played Nelly Dean) in Wuthering Heights. (one of my 2 all-time favorite movies)

Edna May Oliver** (played Lady Catherine de Bourgh) in the 1940 Pride and Prejudice. (the other favorite of all time)

Margaret Hamilton** (played the Wicked Witch of the West) in Wizard of Oz. (I still hate her, and she still scares me. I was young.)

Richard Conte (played Emilio Barzini) in The Godfather.

Guy Pearce (played Fernand) in The Count of Monte Cristo.

David Prowse (played Darth Vader) in Star Wars. (also the really evil Sith Lord Palpatine, played by Ian McDiarmid)

Henry Fonda (played Frank) in Once Upon a Time in the West.

Jack Farthing** (played George Warleggan) in Poldark.

Heath Ledger (played Joker) in The Dark Knight.

Anthony Hopkins (played Hannibal Lecter) in Silence of the Lambs.

Louise Fletcher** (played Nurse Rached) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Marton Csokas (played Teddy) in The Equalizer.

Gene Hackman (played Little Bill Daggett) in Unforgiven.

(** means I had to look up their real name)
I know I'm forgetting some, Darn it!

Heath Ledger (played Joker) in The Dark Knight.
Oh yes ... redefined the role.
I should have included Heath Ledger as Batman. An oversight.

I thought Jack Nicholson's Joker was brilliant. And then Heath Ledger took the character to another level, so that now Nicholson's Joker is just an afterthought.
