Paul Simon sold his catalog to Sony for millions. He'll still end up a historical footnote to Dylan.

Where is the love for Paul Simon? Why compare him to Bob Dylan? They are both great artists.

Geezer singer-songwriters are destined to fade into the mists of time.
But some will remember Sounds of Silence, Scarborough Fair, The Boxer,
Bridge Over Troubled Water, Kodachrome and 50 Ways, for a long time.

"He's cashing out while he can in the hope that the broader commercialization of his greatest works might just secure him a better place in history — if even temporarily — no matter how sad an indictment of our times that may be."

Jeepers, Creepers. The guy is 79 Y/O. He is getting $400 million. Why be so cynical? There was a lot of great music from the 60's that will be played for decades. It is stupid to think only 2 performers will be noted in the future. If the author is so darned smart, maybe he could tell the world what Paul Simon should have done. Good for Paul Simon!!

Can someone make a case as to why Bob Dylan is considered a 'great'?

Dylan and Springsteen are the two most overrated of all time.

I saw Paul in concert with Sting not too many years ago. Great show.

I've always loved Paul Somon and his music. Rhythm of the Saints became one of my faves with all the different beats etc...

Frankly, I believe that virtually anyone could make that case --- definitively and with relative ease.

If you think of Dylan's body of work, particularly from his early years, as timely poetry expressed in song (as he himself openly described it), that work has precious few equals (...even though that nasal singing voice is admittedly almost painful to listen to).

That said, Paul Simon is among my favorite artists --- despite being, by many accounts and events, not a particularly nice person.
With several hundred million dollars at age 79, I'm guessing that Simon doesn't much care about being perceived as "nice". ;)

It's a boomer thing.

How many artists from before 1950, can you name, and do you listen to?

I’m not a boomer and I listen to music...including Bob and Paul.

[W]hat pre-1950 musical artists do you listen to?

As someone who grew up in a musical family, I have listened
to these artists who were "big" pre-50's (but not regularly).
-- Frank Sinatra
-- Louis Armstrong
-- Bing Crosby
-- Benny Goodman
-- Glenn Miller
-- The Andrews Sisters
-- John Phillip Sousa

But the question I asked is - what pre-1950 musical artists do you listen to?

Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Handel, Shostakovich, and many others.

And those show my point. Will Bob Dylan still be as listened to, in 50 to 100 years from now as, say, Sinatra or Satchmo? Or even Cole Porter songs or George Gershwin? Something to think about. . .

For myself, there is style and then there is recording quality. Classical music from long ago is enjoyed by many because it is performed by many different orchestras (and other groups) with modern recording quality. Much of the 1930s music, as an example, does not have this option so is difficult to listen to (for some of us) even if the style is interesting.

I suspect Bob Dylan will be listened to for a long time to come but by less and less over time.

Gershwin is great! As a child I was given a recording of An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue and must have listened to it 100 times before I was 10. It's still great. In fact, I think I'll turn it on now. :)
