I’m not that crazy about flying when it isn’t necessary, so I probably wouldn’t do this. However, it‘s an interesting business idea for the airlines in today’s environment.

maybe, there was another TUG thread on the 'nowhere flights'. There are (were) gambling cruises to nowhere.

Along those same lines... over 30 years ago I took a 'Fear of Flying' class offered by our airport authority (sadly they did away with it years ago). It was 4 weeks of meeting once per week. The 4th and final week was at flight from Omaha, NE to Des Moines, IA for dinner. The idea being the physiological edge of flying for no reason. (I didn't take the flight because we had a planned trip to Vegas that same week, so I flew as a 'graduation' reward, just not for no reason).

Still very grateful for the class. I'm not afraid to fly any more and I credit the 'Fear of Flying' class for that.

What would the purpose be? We only fly in order to get from one place to another.

With the possible exception of travelling in First Class in non-pandemic times, the least enjoyable part of any trip is the hassle of flying. Neither the long baggage and security lines, nor the cramped quarters in economy these days, make flying anything other than a necessary evil, IMO.

So my answer, even apart from the added exposure risk to Covid-19, is an emphatic "NO"!!

I agree. I keep reading, “the middle seats were empty for social distancing”. No, thank you! That that is not 6 feet!

I have a friend who once booked a r/t turnaround flight to Australia and back. The flight was cheap and gave him the miles boost he needed to keep his top elite status for the next year.

Look upon me as a pioneer. I did this over fifty years ago. I was flying home from college over Easter break. I started out from Minneapolis heading for Newark. As it turned out, the entire eastern seaboard was socked in with fog. We (I had a former roommate travelling with me on the same flight) ended up landing in Detroit. The airline checked us in to a hotel somewhere around midnight, with the two of us having to catch a bus to the airport provided by the airline just past six the next morning. (Ouch!) So the next day, we took off from Detroit on what turned out to be a seven hour flight that landed in Detroit. (No relief from the fog.) Can't say that this flight to nowhere was all that entertaining, but I was one of the firsts!

In case you are wondering how everything turned out, the two of called the person who had been our freshman proctor who lived nearby. He and his parents put us up for the night and we took a train the next day.

A simple no. What is the purpose flying to no where./

You either just have to love flying, which I don’t, or need the miles, as someone mentioned above.

In the upper Midwest during the winter, they can be under constant cloud cover for weeks on end. There have times where I have seen "flights to nowhere" offered out of Minneapolis or Fargo just for the purpose of seeing the sun! And they usually sell out fast. So add that to your list of reasons.

I can't bring myself to add Australia to my bucket list because I can't handle the idea of a ONE-way flight.

This is my free business advice to airlines. Have flights that don't even take off. Just simulate the flight. It would work like this:
1. Have humorous and attractive pilots and stewardesses.
2. Tell a few jokes about fastening seat belts, no smoking, etc.
3. Serve drinks and a very nice meal, first class style.
4. Have a couple hours to watch a movie, listen to music, or take a nap in a reclined seat.
5. Tell a few more jokes about landing in a fictitious site such as Hawaii.

So this is entertainment/dining! Economy travelers would love to have this first class experience at least once.
And kids can also experience the thrill of traveling without the inconveniences.
With lots of booze and high class dining, I'd be willing to pay big bucks to try this!

I wouldn't do it now. I consider time spent sitting in a plane is probably your biggest risk of exposure to the virus. And that's after standing in line at check in, standing in line at security, then another line to board the plane. I'm not ready for that yet. And then you have to line up to get off.
