We are heading down next week and was wondering if we should try to bring chairs/umbrella's or rent them. Can you rent just the umbrella and have it put where you want? We don't want to be too close to others. Thanks

If you want to be sure you're off by yourself for social distancing purposes, it's best to bring your own.
We were there in early June and the beach was crowded, but the rental umbrellas were not all taken and people self-spaced.
Not sure if the renter only rents out every other space or what, or how he would handle it if there were enough interested
to rent out all of them. Maybe the GO front desk would know. (843) 686-7343
I do know that you cannot rent one and move it somewhere else. They stay where the renter places them.

I'm at GO now. The beach guys are putting up the rental umbrellas and chairs in the premium spots. No social distancing at all. You are right next to your neighbor. We are in Starfish so we are setting up our own somewhat next to the big row between the Marriott access and public access. I would bring my own given the virus.

We have reservations end of July and plan on bring our own umbrella and chairs. We're planning on social distancing and not be real close to our neighbor.

On Hilton Head it's the town that controls the chair/umbrella rentals on the beach; the money's used to fund beach staffing and maintenance. The lifeguards do the set up every morning at 8 and break down every afternoon at 5 - it's a workout for them and watching them it's obvious that the town takes their physical strength into account when they hire. As has been said, you're not allowed to move them and they are pretty close together. If the numbers keep climbing, though, maybe they'll be following up today's "masks indoors" ordinance with social distancing regs, too.

I wouldn't worry about them being disinfected after each day's use. The umbrellas get stored in the big giant boxes you see all along the beach and the chairs get stacked in a row and locked up next to the boxes, so the fresh air overnight should be enough. I don't even know if they do half-day rentals. I don't think they do but if so, disinfecting between the day's two renters would be in order.

Stop at Walmart when you come in off of 95 or the Walmart at the North end of the Island and buy some cheap stuff that will last a week.

Can’t address GO specifically, but the vendor that the Town of Hilton Head uses does all the beaches. Here was the set up today in front of our condo in Palmetto Dunes. They appear to be keeping 6-8 feet of space between the chair pairs.
