I was flying into Boston many years ago and had vacumn packed sausage in my suitcase. I started to be followed by the Beagles... when I was asked to open my suitcase, my sausage was confiscated. I thought I could bring vacumn packed and had purchased at airport upon departure. So disappointed. U often think the agents had great sandwiches...lolol

That should not have happened. Perhaps you should'a checked it?
In light of other stuff they collect, I imagine they had a nice meal.

I did try to complain but got nowhere. The agent was ready to slap me with a fine so I didn't fight it.

You're right, next time

put in checked luggage and declare..however I am nervous now.

My initial thought about TSA’s policy is that the bins may not be virus free. I wonder if they sanitize them after each use. If so, OK. If not, one could be exposing the bag with their food in it to the virus and then putting it back inside their carryon bag. I understand their reasoning, but wonder if they are potentially creating another health issue.

On an aside, we have brought food in our carryon in the past and never had the alarm go off.

I had the same thought. And I have to carry snack food in my backpack for a medical condition.

If it still applies when we are ready to fly we may consider using double clear bags. Once through TSA, remove the inner bag with the food inside and discard the outer bag. It's a wasted bag, but we may feel a bit safer.

US prohibits bringing meat back into the country. I learned an expensive lesson. I brought back several pounds of pork jerky, vacuum sealed and clearly labelled by the manufacturer and purchased at the airport. Immigration said no meat and they were consficated.

Ugh. Not that I’ll be traveling for a while. I always carry quite a bit of food on the plane. The thought of having to put our lunch in the same bins where people put their shoes is gross. I guess I’ll just double or triple wrap stuff.
