Any Reason I Shouldn't Cancel My June 7-14 NV Reservation?

Like everyone else, I'm ready to travel, haha! We have MP NV reservations for June 7-14. United has changed our flight (SFO-PVR) from a non-stop to a red-eye, with a 3 hour layover in Houston.

My wife, eternal optimist as she is, says I should just wait a couple of weeks and see what happens. I have no fears of spending a week on a Vidanta property (I know how hyper they are about cleanliness, hygiene, disinfecting, etc.), but I have 0% confidence the border will be open by June 7.
Who out here has a crystal ball, and can predict the future? :) :) :) Thanks.

Have you checked with MP to see if they will be open?

June 1 is the earliest date that I have read about any of the hotels and resorts opening. A friend who lives in Mexico commented of facebook that everyone is having to stay home until May 15 and then they will start small openings.

If it is open, you will most likely need to stay on property - not a bad place to hang out. There will not be many people there and I am sure the units will be safe. I would be concerned about the taxis and would not ride the bus in June.

We had reservations for friends to go the last week of May, but cancelled those in early March.

I would call Vidanta Reservations and find out if they will allow a cancellation under 30 days
and still allow you to move it to later in the year .That way you have a couple of weeks more to evaluate .

I have always found their reservations dept very helpful .

I got this from Pueblo Bonito last night. It is for their resorts, but I would assume Mayan World will be similar.

PUEBLO BONITO'S CARE PLEDGE

CARE: Conscientious Service, Advanced Standards, Rigorous Sanitation, Elevated Hygiene

Dear Valued Owner,

With early reports showing that the spread of COVID-19 is beginning to slow, the Mexican Federal Government has announced that the quarantine will end on May 31st. Our resorts are scheduled to reopen June 1st, and we are already preparing for your return.

We understand how crucial it is to establish new standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and social distancing. To ensure a safe environment for our guests and staff, we have partnered with various medical specialists and PREVERISK, a global leader in hotel consulting. PREVERISK is certified in preventive protocols for COVID-19 (COVID-19 Hygiene Response Certificate), disinfection, hygiene, general sanitation and food safety.

In addition to tapping the expertise of our consultants, we will also ensure that the hygiene practices at the resorts will meet or exceed the recommendations of local and international health authorities. At all times, our priority is the health and safety of our owners, guests and coworkers.

SOME OF THE NEW STANDARDS OF PUEBLO BONITO'S CARE PLEDGE INCLUDE:

Standards of Cleanliness:

. Hand sanitizing stations have been placed in strategic locations throughout the resorts such as the front desk, restaurant entrances, and all other public areas.
. Cleaning and disinfection protocols that use certified sanitization products have been implemented and are focused on high-touch areas.
. In addition, a comprehensive, general sanitization by a certified third party will be performed prior to reopening, as well as afterward on a periodic basis, according to the recommendations of health authorities.

Upon arrival:
. Suitcase sanitization (external) in steam cabin or with sanitizing product or special device
. Guest sanitization cabin, and infrared digital thermometers for temperature check. Guests with temperatures over 38° C/100.4° F will be checked by a doctor and may not be allowed access.
. Mobile pre-check-in available

Room Amenities:
. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing spray as part of in-room amenities; masks and gloves available on request.
. Paper amenities, pens, and magazines will be removed from rooms (available on request).

Social Distancing, Personal Hygiene & Health:
. Maximum of 2 persons in elevators, excepting family members
. Furniture in public areas will be rearranged per social distancing guidelines (minimum of 1.80 meters/6 feet).

Pool, Spa & Fitness Areas:
. Loungers in pool areas will be set in groups of 2 or 4, which will then be separated by distances of 1.80 meters/6 feet
. Sanitization of equipment in Fitness Centers as well as in wet areas in Spa after each use
. Maximum capacity set for Fitness Center and maximum capacity reduced for Spa

Food and Beverage:
. Furniture will be rearranged in restaurants and bars (1.80 meters/6 feet) and maximum capacities will be established, per social distancing guidelines
. Social distancing reminders on all tables
. Use of masks by food and beverage staff
. Contactless room service available
. Menus will be available on mobile devices and physical menus will be removed.

Quivira Golf Club:
. Sanitization of golf carts and balls before and after use.
. Maximum capacities established for reception and practice areas
. Intervals between tee times increased to 15 minutes
. One golf cart per person, unless otherwise requested by family members
. New rules established to limit touch points during play (example: flagsticks to remain in the hole, bunker rakes to be removed, etc.)

In case COVID-19 cases are detected, the following procedures are in place:
. An on-site detection team, comprised of a physician, the general manager, operations manager and head of security, in coordination with health authorities, has been created.
. Protocol has also been established to handle the situation should a potential case of COVID-19 be detected.
. 24/7 medical service available

Destination Protocols:
Enhanced procedures will be implemented at the SJD International Airport, including thermal cameras and travel background checks on all arriving passengers. The destination is also being certified by a program overseen by the Ministry of Health, which includes new standards for restaurants, hotels, water sports and touristic activities.

Resort management will continue to monitor guidelines and update the procedures, as necessary.

We look forward to serving you again, and pledge to do so in the safest possible environment. Until then, stay healthy and safe!

The border actually never closed. It’s the required quarantine that has lead hotels and restaurants to close. You could go down there today but there would be no resort open to stay at. I’m less afraid of Covid-19 and still more afraid of everything else that you can get sick from down there. You may find there are fewer cases down there than where you actually live.

It's definitely a "Yes" and "No" answer. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the border points between the U.S. and Mexico are closed to all, with the exception of "essential travel". They further explain (direct quote) "The following travel does not fall within the definition of “essential travel” for purposes of this Notification. Individuals traveling for tourism purposes (e.g., sightseeing, recreation, gambling, or attending cultural events)."

However, (and this is the part of which I was not aware), the document further states that (quote) "At this time, this Notification does not apply to air, freight rail, or sea travel between the United States and Mexico, but does apply to passenger rail and ferry travel between the United States and Mexico."

I didn't realize that anyone could still fly into Mexico. Interesting. Thanks for the response!

@musictom, I heard from a friend that Vidanta won't be reopening companywide until July 3. Try calling the Vidanta reservation line (800-292-9446) to confirm.

You can still fly to Mexico, the problem is A.) your flight not canceling. B.) The resort not being open.

I can’t speak for NV, but I have a existing stay at the JW in Cabo around that time. I’ve been told by relatives that live down there most of the resorts are slated to open June 1st, and so far my reservation is still standing. I’m more concerned my flight from lax on alaska is going to get canceled

Vidanta did indeed confirm they are not opening before July 3. I rebooked with them for October 10-17. Hopefully United will credit/refund me for my flight, which they have indeed changed as well. :)
