Obviously a very small data set, but great to see the positive results. I saw that the treatment is also showing signs of being helpful for those with pulmonary hypertension, which I had never heard of until my Aunt was diagnosed with it in February and was given a grim prognosis. There was limited treatment available and nothing is worse than discovering a loved one is ill with a nearly untreatable illness. I love seeing what treatments that the researchers are developing. I hope that this proves to be successful. Thanks for posting.

Link

From the report in the link: Brazil had to suspend a trial of hydroxychloroquine after too many participants were developing heart arrhythmia.

So much for the link, now: I am not a doctor or a research scientist, so don't put too much faith in what I say below. It is a layman's comment and not that of a qualified expert.

From what I read, it seemed that even in the "successful" reports of hydroxychloroquine, it only helped those with mild symptoms and then speeded their recovery. (A later Chinese report suggested that it might not have any effect.) It could well have been that the Brazilian team was trying higher dosages (they had been doing that) in an attempt to see if the drug would then have a more successful impact with an increased dosage. Heart problems were a rare, but known side effect of lower dosages. The higher dosages might just have increased the frequency of that side effect. (Again, this is a layperson's speculation.)

This is a last gasp, measure. Hopefully none of us will get to the point that we would need this treatment.

extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy

Note: I find is scary that they had already tried most of the other experimental treatments: "...Enes Dedic was treated with all the potential drugs used for COVID-19 including hydrochloroquine, azithromycin, Kaletra, Actemra, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories."

Roger, hydroxycholoquine acts as a zinc channeling drug into cells. The zinc tends to interrupt a part of viral replication. It would work best with additional zinc suppliment, which is ofter omitted in these trials. Yes, it is an early stage treatment only. Once you get to the cytokinase storm stage, it would do very little good. (Some researchers think it affect the COVID attack on hemoglobin, but this is "up in the air". It does this against malaria, part of its anti malarial effectiveness.)

We are still learning about how the virus attacks the body.

Regarding the Covid 19 antibody test studies. (Like the Stanford study in the Bay area or the new NYC study)

These studies seem to show that there is a huge amount of under-counting of people who have been infected (10x-80x) that means instead of < 1% of the "hard hit cities" populations having had Covid That maybe 10-20% of the areas may have had Covid.

PLUS having worked in a medical laboratory for 30+ years testing for IgG antibodies is possible as early as ten days after resolving the disease BUT many / most people will not be positive for 4-8 weeks. So if these antibody studies are finding 20% positives in people who may have had the disease in the past few weeks, the positive rate could be a lot higher in a couple more weeks.

What does this mean? It means that if 20-40 % of the population in these areas have already had Covid then they don't need to social distance themselves and very very likely can't give this to anyone else.

BUT in areas where Covid is still rare, social distancing is still a great idea.

[Let's give the snide political comments a rest, shall we?]

I think they were talking about FDA approved antiseptics, germicides and ultraviolent light. Even so, I bet there is a run on Lysol, lol.
