We end a Swiss rail tour* in Zurich on 6/20 and leave from Munich on 6/23.
We're looking for lodging for 3N that's not in Munich or the airport, but convenient to it.
So, if anyone has a thought, I'm open to suggestions.

*includes the Glacier Express & Bernina Express.

I've only taken one trip to Switzerland, but on our trip we spent a week in the town of Lauterbrunnen. I think that it was about 2 hours from Zurich by train (easy-peasy connections). It was absolutely beautiful valley, almost comparable to Yosemite valley. Check out photos of the surrounding towns, Wengen and Grindelwald, as well as Staubbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen. You can also take a cog wheel train into the Jungfraujoch, a saddle between the Jungfrau and the Monch. For you the only bad part would be the trip to Munich. Good luck - there are many wonderful choices in Switzerland.

Btw, closer to Munich we enjoyed Rothenburg (that might be perfect for a few days) and also loved Salzburg. Both of those would be much closer.

My dear daughter (16 years old) is an exchange student in Switzerland this year. I'm super jealous of your rail tour. I hope you don't mind me asking -- but where are you all going? It sounds wonderful.

Gosh, there's waaay too much to do in Bavaria without holing up in a hotel waiting for a flight. A day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, Innsbruck, etc. I am no help when it comes to the logistics of it, but either online and/or a T/A with extensive German experience should be able to lay out a plan. We started a river trip adventure in Summer '18 with 4 days in Munich. I was able to visit for the first time in 50 years, the city where I was stationed in Uncle Sam's Army.

Travel between these points are by train with 1-2 nightly stops in each...
Zurich-Montreux-Zermatt-(Glacier Express)-St.Moritz-(Bernina Express)-Lugano-(Gotthard Express)-Lucerne.

This trip is more about looking out windows than hiking the hills.
I did Jungfraujoch train in a former life (with DW #1), so I think I'll skip it this time.

I've heard good things about Regensburg, and there's direct trains to the airport.
I'd stay in Munich, but wanted a more scenic/countryside visit this time.

I'd go to Innsbruck and explore from there for a few days.

We were just in Munich for 3 nights at the Hotel Metropol near the Hauptbahnhof and loved our time there, although it sounds as though you wish to avoid staying in that city. So between Zurich & Munich, why not consider Salzburg, Austria? Regensberg was delightful for the day we were there on our recent Danube cruise, but I'm not sure it would occupy you for longer.

Innsbruck+Salzburg: Nice, but BT/DT.
I think after a week in the Alps, I'll be ready for some flat(er)-land, so...

With advice from "Seat 61," I booked a train direct from Zurich to Munich.
I now plan to spend 2N in Munich and take a train to Regensburg for 1N.
Then return to the Munich airport.

Of course, I'll post a trip report on the flip side.

The Man in Seat 61 is so helpful! I do recommend the Hotel Metropol in Munich- were you to stay one night longer there you could take advantage of a special package that includes their excellent breakfast + Munich transport pass and a free drink at their bar. I also recommend Radius tours- we went with them to Dachau for a deeply moving experience- but they have many other tours on offer.

Thanks for the tip!
I may do that and do Regensburg as a day-trip.

We did Neuschwanstein castle as a day trip from Munich. Can't advise on the guide because it was part of a pre- river cruise. Also a great biergarten in Munich, can't remember the street name but it's the one just to the left as you go out the main entrance of the Hauptbaunhof, and maybe 3 blocks, parallel to the train tracks. Ask at the tourist desk and they will point you to it.
