Christmas Tree

At WKV . The sweet family next to me was checking out today. I saw them dragging out a live tree from their villa as they were loading up to leave. So sweet that they had that for kids. Warmed my heart.

I do not mean any disrespect but I find it odd to cut a tree for just a week or so. Unless you mean that they had a tree in a pot which is equally odd, for other reasons. Few years ago we bought a plastic Christmas tree. I had always hated those but I thought, what the heck, I would survive. Few years fast forward, I now love it. Not only I save a tree every year but it is also more convenient to just take it and put it back in the storage in the basement every year. Is it as nice as a natural one? Probably not but I find once you put the decorations and the lights, it is still very nice.

We've spent a few Christmas vacations in timeshares now. We always ensure that we bring the stockings that grandma made for each of the kids (quite impressive pieces of art actually). Both times at SDO we purchaed the largest piece of green poster paper we could find. We then had the kids design and cut-out a Christmas tree and then decorate it. The "tree" was then attached to the sliding patio door and we placed our gifts under it. Yeah - it doesn't feel the same but it was still fun.

Today's Christmas trees are farmed trees so there is a new one planted for each one cut. Very few Christmas trees are cut from the "wild".

And fresh Christmas trees aid the environment during their growing life by absorbing CO2 and are often composted to return nutrients to the soil.

I am not sure I am buying the argument that this

But also the whole process from planting, shipping, selling, customers buying, taking them home and discarding them is not exactly green. I apologize, I did not try to lecture anyone about the environment. I respect it but unfortunately I waste as much as the next person. The plastic tree works for us. We have had it for 5-6 years, it looks good every year, we will use it for at least another 5-10 years so I believe it could be better for the environment in the long run.

The less people buy the more they go to waste. It’s sad watching them get tossed. I try to get my tree very early December so I can enjoy it. Maybe I’m getting older but I’m feeling guilty these days. But that smell is amazing.
