Hi folks...
The good news is that I have found TUG ,,, My wife and I just spent 2 weeks, one in Sedona at the Summit, and the other in Phoenix at the Legacy as guests of our friends... and we had a blast... so much so that we are exploring the possibilities.

what we have concluded is a points based program like shell would most likely more suit our style as we like to travel to many locations...

So trying to compare programs is like trying to broker peace in the middle east... nothing is clear and straight forward in this game...

So which points programs have the most to offer in the resale market and is there a chart that compares the various plans? a Week a Legacy in peak season with shell for a 2 br is 6150 pts... yet I see wyndham postings and RCI posting with tens of thousands of points... Newbie needs help
Thanks so much

You cannot compare different points programs, each is its own little universe. For example, 6000 shell points may get you a 2bdr in sedona in high season, but you might not be able to book anything, not-a-thing, with 25000 Club Wyndham points.

Start with this post. Once you answer those 12 questions, it'll be a lot easier to guide you.

Shell's points are the 6150 sound right for Legacy Resort. And your LARGE 1,000s (like 203,000 or 154,000 and other in the thousands) are right for the Wyndham system.

These are "currencies" but there really is NO EXCHANGE boards for these different points systems.

I own in both of the above points systems. And in DVC points and RCI points.

You can find FREE Shell points ... many included free transfer also...okay, they "sell" for like $1 as there has to be some value for it to be a transfer.

There are 4 clubs in Shell ... which gives you an early booking window for their club points. I own in the WEST club which has the lowest fees of the 4 clubs.

And if you live in the Western part of the US .. Shell might be a good match.

He says he lives in Halifax. That ain't West!

It might be helpful if participants give a number of 'their' point system that will secure a 'better' resort 1 bedroom in high season.

For instance, in RCI Points, 40-50,000 points will get you a very nice week- plus of course exchange fees and membership (around $400/yr). Hawaii would be more, as would a top ski resort in high ski season. Lesser resorts in off or shoulder season can be a LOT less. Like around $250/wk all in.

Sorry .. I missed where the OP is located. He mentioned Legacy Resort in PHX ... I have been there twice - both times for MLB Spring Training vacations. ANd I own both Shell and Wyndham points systems.

The real question is WHERE and WHEN does the OP want to vacation at?
That would help to define which timeshare groups cover areas that interest you and your family.

As for the difference in point count for the Legacy Resort .. Shell is the operator of the Legacy Resort. Wyndham brought Shell and Wyndham is offering some of the Shell inventory to its Wyndham points owners to book .. but ONLY owners who brought directly from Wyndham (resale Wyndham points are WAY cheaper than developer points purchase).

Newbie Help...

Thanks Tuggers... I feel most welcome here... so I guess my first post was not detailed enough. Calling Noob error :)

So the plan is for Missus and I, and service dog to leave Halifax area around late Jan to early feb and scoot south of snow line and then head to arizona... was planning about 3 weeks travel down, couple weeks in Arizona and another 3 weeks back.

So looking for options for shorts stays on way down, and from Texas across to Arizona... the climate really helps the old guys RA (Rhuematoid Arthritis)

So any tips, pointers etc... I am a sponge

Thank you so much

The post above that suggested you fill out the 'what to buy for Newbies...' survey is spot-on.

answer the questions as honestly as possible...you'll get good advice. Having pre-conceptions about what might fit you is probably not the most helpful part of the process. The devil is in the details; tuggers will help you find the right unit for you! Welcome.

It is not difficult (by owning enough points/weeks) to spend fairly lengthy time in timeshares. The problem is in the transit time. Usually timeshares are booked 9 months to a year ahead of use, and they seldom just sit empty (like hotel rooms) waiting for someone to call and book a room. Timeshares strive for much closer to 100% occupancy well ahead.

As a snowbird, you should probably look at owning enough weeks/points to allow you 3-weeks to a month (resale, of course), and plan on 'hotel-ing' it while in transit. You'll probably want to buy into a point based system, as it would be very difficult to buy weeks on the resale market that would allow consecutive weeks of occupancy.

Another option would be to get with a realtor in Arizona who might have access to or a line on a fractional ownership home/condo aimed at snowbirds.

Good luck!

Back to my original post ... Shell Vacation Resorts has 3 resorts in AZ, the one in Texas and the one in New Hampshire .... these 5 resorts make up most of the American Club and give you priority in booking at these resort. But you also can use your points to book at the other Shell resorts doing the open booking window.

You have stayed at the Legacy Resort (PHX) ... you have a base line. Do some more research on unit sizes and points needed .. then decide IF your MF limits would work for the length of stay in AZ +/- your trip stay overs in Texas.

Shell allows you to book LONGER than 7 nights on one reservation, also (I do believe).

Shell points can be had FOR FREE (or $1) with free closing .. so closely review MF costs.

I own in the California Club .. my relatives live in California and the MFs are slightly lower. And in a few days, I will have 2 overlapping units for 3 nights ... 3rdyear, I will be hosting a family get-together (2 years at the Legacy, this year in San Digeo ... all 3 years at Shell resorts).
