Ok, so it was only $7, and it cost $6 to play, but so far, I'm ahead of the game! 3 out of 5 and no powerball if you're curious.

LOL! I laid out a total of $6 for the three plays with my coworkers and we kept winning about $4 and putting it back into more tickets.

Had to go to work today.:(

I like never play ANY lottery. But the fever caught me, the lottery line at the supermarket had 1 person and I decide on a $10 limit. Got 5 plays.

My co-worker's LARGE extended family on his wife's side like lottery tickets ... he has played $20 for each of the last 3 games.

I had the POWER NUMBER "10" and won $4 back.

Co-worker had $60 played between those 3 drawings and has won "ZERO".

BING, BING, and BING!

I feel I really did WIN!!!

I was out $6 and he was out $60.....

I spent $10 and won nothing. The closest I got was two numbers on the same line, no powerball.

It is actually the state governments that get the money from the lottery. The lotteries are run by the states.

I think he's talking income tax on the winnings

Ahh, gotcha. Makes sense. None of the states will make any money on income tax since they all have no state income tax (FL and TN) or don't collect in on lottery winnings (CA).

My husband is a teacher, and he was in two different pools.

No one at his school won, but a group at a school in Clifton, NJ, had a ticket that won $50,000! There were 76 people in the pool, so they all get about $658 before taxes. :p

Not bad for a $2 investment.

We got a 10 also- the only number on one card- and 3 numbers on another card. We put the money back into more tickets.

I never play the lottery as well, but it was worth the $6.00 I put into it to try for that much money. And-No way was I going to let my coworkers leave me behind at the hell-hole job I have! LOL!

Is there a difference in winning 1.5 billion and say 300 million? Maybe with that much money even someone that would go broke with a few hundred million and no financial planning skills could survive.

I heard some very poor, even by buying lottery ticket standard, strategies. 1234567 is a poor set of numbers to choose. As is buying multiple tickets of the same number so your share is higher if someone else picked the same numbers.

I broke even. I spent nothing and I won nothing. I admit I was tempted but common sense prevailed. :)

Yes, those are poor strategies.

As Fran Liebowitz said, your odds of winning the lottery are identical, whether or not you buy a ticket.

Funny but not true.

Your odds of winning are identical no matter what numbers you choose. And they're certainly higher than if you don't play at all.

But the odds of having to share the prize varies depending on the numbers you choose. If you're going to play, there are better strategies than others.

The real question is 'Is a lottery ticket worth the price of the ticket?' and basically the answer is no.

Did I play this last one? Yes. I bought 20 tickets.

My strategy?
I chose numbers are are unpopular - I read 10 articles about unpopular numbers to determine which numbers are unpopular. The goal was that if my numbers hit I wouldn't have to share the pot with as many people as if I chose popular numbers (popular numbers happened to hit this time around - which is why there were at least jackpot 3 winners and likely many small prize winners).

5/6 of the numbers on each ticket were the same. The idea was to maximize small prize winners if I hit a couple numbers but not the whole thing. I needed something to make it worth cashing in small prizes since I don't live in a lottery state.

As my DH always says - "You can't lose unless you play."

I don't play every week but did spend $6 on this drawing. If you can't afford to lose $6 then I agree with both of you but I can lose $6 in the couch and never miss it. That wasn't always the case but it is today.

I've talked in the past about a friend who won $16M in the Ohio Lottery so I know peeps do actually win, it's not a scam. And eventually someone is going to win that money so I'd like to at least be in the running.

For me it's worth a few dollars to be in the game. Totally worth the $6 to hope and dream.

You can't win if you don't play.

I let the machine pick the numbers. $6 (net $2 loss) was worth the amusement. :D.

Never did understand why someone thinks a pick of a particular set of numbers will make any difference in a 1 in 262 Million chance.

Cheers
