MOD discount

ive been toying with marriot time sharing for a while now and think will go thru with it

however before that im going to thailand next week and wondered if it is ok to use the MOD discount,which cuts a lot of the price for hotel stays..
any thoughts?

I'm not sure the system would even allow you to use the MOD designation if you are not currently an owner in the MVCI system, but I could be wrong.

It will be interesting to read the thoughts of others.....

It will be luck of the draw so use it at your own risk. Last time I used it in Shanghai, they asked me to provide evidence that I am an owner. Also, it seems that Marriott hotels are more diligent in checking the discount qualification overseas than in US. I have never been asked to provide evidence when checking into a US Marriott.

Sorry, but the Marriott owners discount is for Marriott owners. If you don't currently own a Marriott you aren't eligible for the discount.

The Marriott computers can track Marriott ownership. My ownership status is linked to my Marriott Rewards account.

You could likely arrive in Thailand, be denied the MOD rate and be forced to book at the rack rate. Not worth the risk of paying substantially more.

I would also say that you should not use the MOD rate. As already stated the discount rate is only available to Marriott TS owners and everytime I have used it I have been asked to provide prroof at check in. I use my owners card issued for one or other of my TS properties.

Also not that many Marriott Hotels will offer the MOD discount. It is mainly used at the TS properties when reservin g for a paid stay. Thyat is how I maqinly uise it to add an extra night whenh I need it due to flight schedules.

Some Marriott Hotels do offer the MOD rate but these are typically linked to a TS property. e.g JW Marriott Phuket and Marriott Son Antem Golf Resort & Spa in Majorca.

These two always ask for the proof of ownership when I have used the MOD rate.

I have never seen Marriott.com give a discounted room rate at a hotel using the MOD discount in the USA. It works for MVCI timeshare properties and only if its available. Its not guaranteed even to owners.

If someone was able to do this, I would think its un-ethical and risky.

Your not going to get many people here saying to go for it. Those here have paid for that privilege, through the purchase of their weeks and through annual MFs. The use of the MOD code isn't cheap, we all pay a lot of money to have access to those discounted rates, people won't promote someone who hasn't paid for that privilege to get it for free.

In fact, just starting this thread could be seen as a cause to start a fight.

Are you a Marriott Elite member? There are often elite discounts, at least Sun-Thurs, that can be at least as good as MOD.

I think that your Marriott Rewards card number is linked to your MVCI ownership customer number. So when you make a bookking using the MOD code it is automatic that the hotel or resort knows that you are an owner. So even if they do not ask for proof of ownership , they still have the information to hand on the system. When I call MVCI owner services they always use my MR number as one of the ways to identify my account and ownership.

I have a family friend that works for Marriott and she can look up my name and readily see my ownership and all my bookings. She works at the Maui Hotel site not at some central corporate office, so I agree with above. They just need your Drivers License to prove who you are and the other information is radily available.

What I think the real discussion should be is how often do we see MVCI properties enforce such a check and protect their revenue streams.

This is the same as booking under any other special rate code on Marriott.com.

FWIW: I routinely use AAA, MOD, E0P, M11, and MEB discount codes as appropriate and rarely get asked to provide any form of documented evidence.

The only one I have seen challenged in the past is AAA. Probably becuase its popular and marriott advertises directly as a radio button on the website.

Most other codes need to be manually entered in a blank field.

E0P - is Elite Promo rate
MEB - Marriott e-Break rate (those pesky weekly weekend rates offering 20%) at select destinations and hotels.

Marriott has used hundreds of these code over the years. You can look them up in the internet and find most.

The key is qualifying for these rates. You must be able to demonstrate that you qualify for that rate upon check-in IF ASKED to do so.
