Worse units each time we rent

Has this happened to anyone out there?

We have rented at the same resort four times through a third party. The first time we were assigned the penthouse. Second time a lower floor with a beautiful view. Third time looking at the roof of the adjacent restaurant. Fourth time overlooking the parking lot.

If we rent again, will they set up pup tent in the parking garage? Although we like the time share, we hesitate renting there again.

Some alleged thoughts...

If you are renting through a "third party" (non-owner), then that "third party" entity likely has little or no control or influence over what actually comes into their hands as "available rental inventory".

In todays' Internet age, owners can generally rent out what they own directly, at low advertising cost and with relative ease, without paying hefty fees and commissions to any "third party" agency or entity. Accordingly, maybe the "best" units are simply reaching "third parties" with ever-decreasing frequency. Perhaps you should consider looking around for owner-direct advertised rentals at that unidentified facility, whatever / wherever it may be. If you find an owner-direct ad, you'll usually be able to learn in advance the precise identity and location of the unit you're renting, since you are renting exactly what that owner owns. Moreover, you'll almost certainly pay less for a owner-direct rental than you've been paying either renting through the resort or through some other "third party" (non-owner) entity.

If you tell us the name of the resort, and who you rented from (owner, resort, rental website) we can tell you more about the placement rules at the resort. As Theo said, if you rent directly from an owner, they usually know what type location you will get.

Could be randomness but as has been noted, guests don't have much standing.

The resort was the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. I'd rather not involve the third party here.

The first unit was top floor ocean view week 6,
The next year, two floors lower ocean view week 3, then bottom floor week 6.
This year bottom floor back side week 3, when it appeared that there were empty ocean view units.

Each time we declined the sales promotion.

The rent was low for weeks 3 and 6, so we can't really complain. It just appears that they might track renters and favor new sales prospects.

I own at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, and if you rent from a third party which I assume is the owner you would get the owner's unit. The resort only assigns units if they rent them directly to you.
Unit ending in 1 - 5 are ocean view and 6 to 10 are intercoastal.

We own week 8 and 9 and we stay in the same unit every year which is always one of the 2 we own. They usually arrange it so we can remain in the same unit for 2 weeks.

Next time you rent privately, you should ask the unit number.

We are there now and the weather has been in the 80's everyday. Today is a little cooler but not complaining.

Fuzzy details...

...it appeared that there were empty ocean view units.

It's not at all clear to me what you mean by "third party" (an actual identity is irrelevant and not requested). That said, if the owners of those empty "ocean view" units you saw have not overtly authorized their occupancy by someone else, then those owners have the option and every right to let their unit sit empty; they own that unit / week and can do with it as they see fit. Maybe, for example, they would actually be there themselves for just a few days during their owned week, as I have done myself on occasion.

In short, seeing a ocean view unit being apparently "empty" does not necessarily translate into it being available for your occupancy as a renter through a "third party".

The resort has week and floating week owners. Also, I believe points. So there might be a large number of units available for any given week, especially week 3.

We were just wondering if this has happened to others here or elsewhere. We were pleasantly surprised when we got the ocean view units, but now we suspect that if we want those again, we'll have to use a different source.

If you are renting from an owner, the owner should KNOW where their guest will be placed in advance, unless they are renting you bonus time, or some other kind of "extra" time that is not pre-assigned. When you make the Resv. ask the owner to guarantee the view in writing. If it's not what you want - don't rent from them.
