I was just looking around the RCI site today and I stumbled across the extra vacations portion of their site. I saw a 2br week long stay in August at Bonnet creek for under $900. This got me to thinking. If I used my points for that stay it would be 224k points, at $4.50 per/1000 that totals out to $1008. My question is whats the catch? Is there some kind of a booking fee or a huge tax or what? If there is a tax or booking fee does anyone know how much it is?

Just checked the Wyndham site and found this. Hope it helps.

08/20/2012 7 nights 2 Bedroom Deluxe 206,600

206,600 points x $4.50 per thousand = $927

no catch..although I think there are taxes.

often rentals can be had for less than our maintenance fees,

In my opinion the fact that Wyndham will rent inventory (our inventory) through sites like RCI's extra vacations and Wyndham's extra holidays is the biggest reason Wyndham timeshares can be purchased so cheaply. Its cheaper to rent than to own

Thats b/c in Wyndham 8/20 is not considered prime time. RCI has a price of $818.99 with check in of 8/4. This really made me mad, they have a checkin of 8/25 for $566.99 those are both for 2br units at BC. Cheapest I can find on wyndham for a 2 bed check in 8/25 is 189k points.

I do not disagree with an earlier post, I think if you check the two programs identified, it would not be uncommon for Wyndham and/or RCI (same parent company) to be renting for less than maintance fees. It my understanding that Wyndham is trying to transform itself into a strong rental group as they downsized (or in their words "right sizing") their timeshare sales operation and their RCI exchanges programs. Remember technically and legally, the trusts for Club Wyndham Plus and Club Wyndham Access are not the for profit Wyndham Companies and the Hotel Group is not part of the Wyndham Vacation Ownership (primarily timeshares) group.

Downsized? We had so many timeshare presentations of Wyndham lately! They are really pushing people to trade their weeks in for Wyndham weeks. We did very well with lots of cash and extra RCI weeks since they were offering huge incentives just to attend. And they do have such a big inventory in the RCI program. The rentals can be quite cheap indeed or for a few TPU's. I actually thought they were expanding: they are everywhere and own so many resorts and hotels in the industry.

I don't see any "downsizing" either. It is all Supply and Demand. If Wyndham can drop the price of a rental below MF price, they will get non-owners to rent. They have a supply, and with lower price comes higher demand.

Are you saying their are taking the non-Wyndham weeks or just PICing them in with a new purchase?

I guess its not so bad

After looking at our travel habits I guess owning the points is better than renting from RCI b/c we take one 7 day trip and four 4 day trips. If we were using extra vacations those 5 trips would be around $2400 while our points run us around $1800. I still need to learn about the RCI nightly stays and the possibility of paying cash for those. Knowing what I know now I'm not sure I'll ever deposit points in RCI again though, I'll just use the pool every year instead and if want to go outside Wyndham I'll at least check extra vacations to see whats available.

I do not use RCI very much. I think nightly stays is just points.

Extra Vacations can be great bargains.

One of our regular posters snagged a Bonnet Creek 2 BR Deluxe, for a full week, for January 2012 for less than $500. I think they booked back about August-September of 2011.

RCI comes in handy when you have cancelled points that you don't use up by the end of the year since cancelled points can't be pooled.

RCI Extra Vacations through the Wyndham portal

I bought 231,000 Wyndham points on resale. everything is going well, but I cannot do any searching through the Wyndham RCI portal. It keeps returning an error. Is anyone else having this trouble? No, I don't have any points in RCI right now, but I wanted to poke around to see what was available and how many points it cost.

Also, how can I see the Extra Vacations list? Is that through the portal that isn't working or is that not available through the portal. Do I have to have a separate RCI membership to be able to see those?

Thanks
Theresa

You should still be able to get into the Wyndham/RCI portal, even without a deposit

Try a different browser and check your pop-up settings, etc....I use both Firefox and IE and usually can get at least one to work

I called and got my member number for RCI, but the website refuse to let me register. When I called, the system refused to recognize my member number.

I am thinking that my RCI account hasn't been set up yet on Wyndham's end of things and I just need to wait. I tried Firefox and the same thing happened, so i'm guessing it could be that.

Thank you

Theresa

Basically, you will need to keep calling until it is established.

I'm not desperate to make any reservations, so I'll wait a couple of weeks. If my RCI member number isn't recognized by then, I'll call and see what's up. So far, I've tried on Mac and Windows XP, tried Firefox, IE and Chrome and all give me the same "an error has occurred click here to return to your home page" but there's no link.

I'm patient. I'll give it some time. :)

Thanks,

Theresa

on a side note: anyone know what's up with the wyndham owners' forums? They've been down for a couple of days.
