Recently a Berkley Group agent misrepresented RCI by saying it is OK to take a pet to an RCI resort as long as other guests do not complain. He said that the pet policy was for the protection of RCI in case they had to ask a guest with a pet to leave. Feeling confident in his advice, we took a small dog with us and were asked to leave mid-week - not because of a guest complaint. We would be glad to pay an extra fee if we could take our dog. What is your policy? Of course, I know there are a limited number of resorts that do allow pets. Thank you. I would like to know the real policy.

Since Madge hasn't responded, I'll take a kick at it . . .

The policy is whatever the resort says where you are trading into. Berkley Group cannot commit on behalf of any other resort, nor can RCI. Most are VERY strict about their "no pets" policies, including large fines and cleaning fees if you're found to be violating with a pet. The issue isn't about "current guests" complaining . . . it's about subsequent guests who have allergies or find that your pet has left a "gift" on the carpet.

Again, it is not an "RCI policy" but the policies of the resorts that take precedence on your stay.

gigish@alltel.net,

I'm sorry to hear you were mislead in this way and that it caused you such inconvenience. That was not fair to you.

As Yvonne says, this is a non-negotiable item for most resorts, even sometimes for service dogs. Even beyond the information RCI provides, it is best to call your confirmed resort directly to be sure, because policies can change.

You might find helpful information about traveling with your small dog online at sites like www.petswelcome.com or www.dogfriendly.com.
