Ghost Signs of San Francisco
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Ghost-signs-of-SF-Forgotten-treasures-hiding-in-7955787.php

"SF teems with old, sometimes-elaborate, hand-painted signs and ads, some for businesses that no longer exist. The painters who made them were part of the "gig economy" long before Uber. These corporate murals have a name, "ghost signs," and one local artist took it upon herself to track all 300-plus of them."

Here's the link to the google map: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?hl=en_US&mid=1OShKAGbAWfgPoLdpmxIq1nYsoNw

I wish that I had seen this before we were in San Francisco earlier this month. We were able to see one of the signs from our room at the Donatello - The Olympic Hotel on Mason.

We always do one of the "free" (donations appreciated) walking tours by City Guides http://www.sfcityguides.org/index.html while we are there - this time it was a tour of the locations that Alfred Hitchcock used when filming his movies - but the tour was mostly about Vertigo. The guide was excellent - a man who was a real Hitchcock fan - so his enthusiasm for the subject matter made the sights come alive.

We also took the ferry to Sausalito then walked back across the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a newish walking path that goes from Sausalito through Fort Baker to the bridge then across the bridge. Google maps put it at about 5 miles - so a nice change of pace from walking around the city. The new route keeps you off the the busy road from Sausalito to the bridge, and seeing Fort Baker is a treat itself.
