11. You have up to 30 mos. to use an exchange assignment - all exchange assignments expire on June 30th two years after the use year.

I took the above statement from the FAQ sticky because I wanted to expand on it from something I just learned.

I have a 2012 deposit that was set to expire June 30th 2014. I learned from the Starwood II desk that all this means is I have to either execute an exchange or initiate an ongoing search by that date. The date of the target exchange could be past the June 30th date.

It was even stated that if I had a search initiated before the expiration date and modified it after the date it would still be valid. In fact I was told I could modify the time frame of the target exchange after the deadline date has passed (effectively prolonging the deposit for years - possibly even indefinitely) without penalty as long as I didn't cancel the ongoing search. If the search was canceled you would lose the unit assigned for exchange.

I was unaware of these facts and cannot see this obviously referenced in any old threads I have seen so I thought I would post it. I am sure some people already know this. But their are others, like me, that thought the date exchanged into had to occur before the expiration.

Sorry, but I think you were given the wrong info...see if you can get them to put it in writing...

This whole discussion came about because I was unable to use part of my 2012 lock-off and I was asking if there was anyway I could extend the deposit. I wanted to exchange into WLR in October. That is when the rep said you can't extend but went into the details originally posted.

Now I was allowed to confirm the week in October , so at least an instant exchange could be possible. But I did have a 2013 deposit as well. So it could be possible it used that unit if the rep was incorrect.

I suppose I could contact Starwood and see what they show in their records.

That's correct. It's stated on the email confirmation that SVO sends.
Sorry, I thought it was common knowledge otherwise I would have reported it on TUG

Your Interval International Use Right Assignment Acknowledgement

USE YEAR: 2013
RESORT: Sheraton Vistana Villages
VILLA TYPE: 2 Bedroom Villa
SEASON: Platinum
RESORT ASSIGNMENT CODE: SV3
EXPIRATION DATE: 6/30/2015

Please note: Your assignment cannot be extended by Starwood Vacation Ownership or Interval International, and expired assignments cannot be reinstated. You must initiate your exchange request no later than the expiration date of this assignment and complete travel no later than 12 months beyond the expiration date indicated. Should you cancel a pending request after the expiration date of your resort assignment, the resort assignment will expire and no new exchange request may be initiated against your expired assignment.

So according to the email you quoted everything the rep told me was correct except the travel date has to be completed within 1 year. She very well could have told me that and I misunderstood since I was surprised by the whole conversation. I really never really paid that much attention ( obviously)to the emails before. I'll have to find one and review it.

One more thing she did tell me. She said if you ever let an exchange assignment expire call Starwood and ask to have it extended it. She said they are pretty reasonable and will typically reinstate it even if it has been expired several months. But only Starwood can do it, not II.

Wow! That is good news!
