Madge, Can you explain what is going to happen with regards to being charged taxes on timeshare rentals, last call, and extra vacations. Will this also include exchanges? When will this start, and why is this happening? What about staying at your home resort? Thank you.

branson_is_10,

Currently, taxes are applied only to Extra Vacations. However, there is legislation being proposed in Wisconsin that would indeed impose a tax on exchange guests visiting that state.

We recently sent a message to our Wisconsin members about Senate Bill 638 and and its Assembly version AB 1088. Occupancy taxes and the Premier Resort Tax would be added to timeshare exchanges in Wisconsin. If SB 638 passes (or its Assembly version), it will cost timeshare owners $200 a week or more in taxes just to exchange into a Wisconsin timeshare resort.

You may wish to visit your Wisconsin Senators’ websites to express your thoughts on these bills.

Hi Madge,

The following is a summary of the Wisconsin Senate Bill 638. As a Wisconsin timeshare owner and user, I am against another Wisconsin Tax for any reason.

However, it appears to me that this Bill is being Introduced as a response of Exchange Companies and Resorts using Exchange Weeks and renting them out and not paying the rental State and Local Taxes due by calling them Exchanges and not Rentals.

If this is not the reason, "What does RCI Legal Department say is the reason for this Senate Bill 638 being introduced?

Walt

SENATE BILL 638
An Act to amend 66.0615 (1m) (a); and to create 66.1113 (1) (am),
66.1113 (4) and 77.994 (3) of the statutes; relating to: authorizing a
premier resort area to limit or prohibit managed time-share projects and
to impose a tax on the exchange of time-share units. (FE)

Walt,

RCI has always paid all applicables sales and lodging taxes. I cannot comment about why the State of Wisconsin may have introduced this bill. I strongly recommend that you visit the website above to express your concerns and ask questions of the source.
