I have a friend who wants to buy a Marriott unit resale. He was thinking about Myrtle Beach, because he likes to golf there. We had a discussion of what his primary goal of the location was (go to MB every year to golf, take the family, not take the family, go to other places, etc.), and whether or not he planned on using the home resort more than half the time. He thought these were all good questions, and I suggested he talk with his wife. My thought process was that if he really only wanted to go to MB, to buy there, but if he wanted something with good trading power, to buy someplace else.

Now, if you had to rank the top 5 Marriott locations based on trading power, which would you choose. I'm thinking (in order) all platinum weeks in Hawaii, any Caribbean resort, Vegas, or any warm weather US beach resort (Palm Beach, NC, SC, Southern California) or any warm weather weeks on the Mediterranean. I'm also thinking he should stay away from Orlando and the rest of Florida.

I would rank Platinum MB in that top 5 along with Platinum HHI.

You are giving him good direction with those listed except I'm not sure Vegas should be in a "top 5 trader" list with the others. I could be wrong on that...

Marriott Ocean watch platinum is an excellent choice for those living on the east coast. It rents and trades very well and if your using it, the travel cost are much cheaper than the others. It has excellent reviews and it always sells out quickly on redweek.com and tug.The time frame of the platinum weeks(20-32)which is great for travel with children in the summer and in the spring for couples and golfing.I would try to get an oceanview or oceanfront unit.

I completely agree with the above. How does it compare with Barony beach oceanside platinum ?
would you place it higher or lower ?

Barony is a great resort. However, I'd put OceanWatch above Barony due to the fact that there is only one Marriott property in Myrtle Beach, but Barony is one of several in Hilton Head. Due to the higher supply of units in Hilton Head, that gives OceanWatch a slight advantage for trading power and demand.

Thanks for the info; it's what I thought. Two quick questions.

In a Marriott resort with silver, gold & platinum seasons, if you own platinum, you can go anytime of the year without exchanging, but if you own silver or gold, you need to exchange up, (through II) right?

Where can you get the calendars for different resorts? At one time, I think they were on the Marriott website, but don't think they're there anymore.

Thanks!

Wrong. You can only reserve in your own season at your resort. If you want to go in another season you have to exchange. Up or down.

They are still available at my-vacationclub.com (login required). They used to be available on an open public site, but once the point system came out, that site isn't the same and they are no longer available there.

For greater long-term assurance concerning trading power, you should buy a resort with an ocean view (oceanside or oceanfront). The new Marriott rating system places a very high value on the units that have "the view". This is not an issue in the traditional II deeded week, yet. However, it very well may be, soon. Using the Marriott Destinations point values would be an excellent barometer to answer this question. Just remember, the lock-offs will give you the possibility of two weeks with one unit.
