For a split week at Ko Olina, the 4-day weekday check-in day is Tuesday and the 3-day weekend check-in day is Saturday. If I want a Tuesday-Tuesday stay, can I accomplish it by splitting the week and consecutively reserving the 4-day and 3-day split week?

Interesting question

For a split week at Ko Olina, the 4-day weekday check-in day is Tuesday and the 3-day weekend check-in day is Saturday. If I want a Tuesday-Tuesday stay, can I accomplish it by splitting the week and consecutively reserving the 4-day and 3-day split week?

Airline fares are sometimes discounted on Tues-Thurs flights so splitting to have a Tues check-in might be a way to take advantage of the fare differences.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried it and how it worked out.

I don't see why you couldn't do this, there is a fee associated with splitting a week though.

The $75 fee to split the week will be offset by the cost savings (x4) of traveling on a weekday.

Is the split week option subject to availability? I've never tried it, but I recall a sales rep saying Marriott has the split week option, subject to availabilty.

In other words, does someone else have to want the 3 days starting on Sat. before they'll let you book 4 days starting Tues? Sounds like a nightmare trying to find availablity if you have to match with another owner. It must be easier to actually use the split week than I understood.

Anyone actually tried it with a Marriott?

Nothing on the website indicates the split week is subject to availability. Here is the excerpt:

Allows you to split your purchased week into two "mini vacations" in the full villa at your home resort. With split-week you can occupy the entire villa for a three-night weekend stay and a separate four-night weekday stay at another time within the same year during the season you purchased.

I would think each resort has a certain amount of inventory set aside for the split week option. So someone has to be able to reserve a part of the split first. Why would the Tuesday check-in person need to wait for a Saturday check-in reservation to happen? It could work the other way around. I am sure they have good statistics on how many weeks are reserved each year and week using this option and they set aside that inventory ahead of time. If they didn't it wouldn't be effective. They could still reserve it out as a full week if it doesn't get split.

You are not subject to finding another renter to occupy your unused days for the week you split. You get a 3 day vacation and a 4 day vacation. There are rules specifying the days of the week allowed for the 3 day rental and the 4 day rental, but you are allowed to take them at separate times during the year. Not sure how the "subject to availability" rule works for reserving your stays, though.

Cheers!

Can you still book 12 or 13 months in advance if you split the week?

What an interesting idea!

We were trying to figure out a way to make split weeks and the subsequent reduction in airfare work for us also. Maybe this can help you, although it wasn't quite using the split back-to-back.

We just bought the two holiday weeks and wanted to see if we could buy a third week with the express intention of splitting it every time to add around the two weeks so as to flesh out the Christmas school break as well as travel on weekdays.

Here's what they said they could do at MAW. we could do it - especially the first part (week before Christmas) as that is much less utilized. The harder part is after New Year's, and especially the first time we did it, as it goes into the next calendar year plus it is used more. We'd have to book the full split for 2011 to utilize it. We would have to pay the fee, but they seemed to think the idea was pretty doable, except you couldn't count on it each year as it is subject to space at the resort. They don't have to have another match up with yours, but they do have to have availability for that week. They said it was much better to simply book a week (so while they try to discourage you, they will book it if it is available - and were totally able and willing to book us had we had the extra week)

In our case, we'd have to book the 2010 additional week either as a split with part of it lining up with the holiday weeks and the other days earlier in the year, or we'd have to book the 2010 week in full the week before Christmas to use it before 2010 ends. Then they could already book the first part of the split in Jan 2011 to occur AFTER our two holiday weeks - and then go on from there each time booking the split for begin of Jan and right before Christmas week. We're still thinking resale for this purpose :)

Please do let us know how it works out!

Can you still book 12 or 13 months in advance if you split the week?

According to the booker at Waiohai, yes, you can book out 13 months if it is consecutive with your other weeks- which doesn't completely make sense when they also talk about subject to availability...Maybe that was just what they said to us, but not an actual requirement - like the poster said above.

The quality assurance checklist does not specify an additional space availability, so it seems to me that only the regular restrictions of floating or fixed rights apply. Therefore, if the week wasn't full, and you put in at the 12 or 13th month timeline, you should be able to get your split. I don't know how they calculate the remainder of the split, but wouldn't you try for that at that weeks 12-13 month window??

I split our week at the Grand Chateau....calling 12 months in advance. You can only call 12 months in advance of the beginning of when you want to use...I wanted April & November....so I had to wait til November for the 2nd reservation.

I had been told that it is based on availability...but at 12 months there is normally availability.

Another point I learned recently was you can ONLY use the spilt week at your HOME RESORT. I wish I could use it in a variety of resorts.

So with a 2BR lockoff and splitting weeks could you actually get 4 mini vacations?

No. You can lock off or split the week, but not both. When you split the week, you must do so with the full villa. From the MVCI site:
Split Week
Allows you to split your purchased week into two "mini vacations" in the full villa at your home resort. With split-week you can occupy the entire villa for a three-night weekend stay and a separate four-night weekday stay at another time within the same year during the season you purchased.
Note that Custom House allows you to split your week into individual nights, although only one weekend stay is permitted per year. Also, Newport Coast and Fairway Villas at Seaview allow you to split your week into one three-night weekend stay and up to four single weekday nights. Thus, for example, you could reserve four separate villas for a single weeknight in January (if space is available).

Just got off the phone with Owner Services :wall: Will call back again to see if I get a different answer.

In short, it is possible to reserve the split week (4 day/3 day) back-to-back if there are available units. The resort does not set aside a certain number of units for a split week. I will have to place two calls to make the reservation: the first call for the Tuesday, 8 Feb 2011 check-in and the second call for the Saturday, 12 Feb 2011 check-in. Will setup reminders to phone-in on 4 Feb 2010 and 11 Feb 2010 to make the reservations.

No, you cannot lock-off and split.

Too bad. I was toying with the idea of getting a MGC, but I've been going to Vegas 3-4 times a year for the past decade and never stay more than 3-4 nights. Getting 4 mini vacations would have been perfect for me.

I will probably stick with hotels for now - more flexibility given my travel habits and I also enjoy spending hours by the pool, which seems to be one of the weaknesses of MGC.

I reserved a split week at Ko Olina:cheer: It was not easy. I called Marriott owner services first thing this morning to reserve a four day stay checking in 8 Feb 2011 and was told that Ko Olina would have to release the four days. Since I wanted to follow up and reserve a three day stay checking in 12 Feb 2011, they agreed to take care of both reservations with a single phone call. So, I had to wait for someone at Ko Olina to wake up and release the four days. Received a phone call this afternoon with both reservation numbers. Checked my email and voila, there were the reservation confirmations for 8 Mar 2011 and 12 Mar 2011 ....the wrong dates! :wall: Called Marriott owner services and spoke with someone who first told me the reservation window for 8 Feb 2011 did not open until next week. I told her that she was wrong then I was promptly placed on hold. She came back and told me that I was correct but nothing was available for that date  . I blew a gasket and asked to speak with a supervisor and was promptly placed on hold. The supervisor came on the line and confirmed there was no availability for a four day stay beginning 8 Feb 2011, but there was availability for a three day stay beginning 12 Feb 2011. So, she booked the three days and called Ko Olina to see what they could work out. Thirty minutes later, the supervisor called to confirm the four day reservation. Looking forward to celebrating our wedding anniversary and catching the 2011 NFL Pro Bowl :whoopie:

Split week at 13 months?

I read through this thread and I am still not sure if this question has been answered. If I wanted to split Myrtle Beach and reserve 3 nights in Myrtle Beach, 7 nights in Orlando followed by the remaining 4 nights at Myrtle Beach, can I do that in one phone call at the 13 month mark?
