Paying Maint with MR Visa card?

This is the first year I have had the MR Visa card and looking to build up my points portfolio. So please forgive me as I am sure this question has been discused years past.

Will I be getting 3 for 1 points if I pay my Maint using the MR Visa card?

We ALWAYS pay our MF's with our Marriott Rewards Visa card. I thought we got more than 3 points per dollar?!?!?!? Maybe I am wrong or just wishfully thinking?!?!?

I don't know, but that's what we do.:D

I'm a frugal points junkie facing a dilemma. I'm torn between paying the MF with a check or with a MR Visa. As an owner, I've come to realize I'm incurring additional expenses on the owners but all those extra MR points is enticing. :wall:

The letter with the MF discussed the savings if paid via check and I'm considering it. It is $266K if all the owners paid in cash vs. credit card. Our MF at Waiohai actually went down from last year so something must have been done right this year.

Anyone else thinking about paying with check instead of the MR Visa?

One may not be able to afford to write a check for the entire maint. fee amount, and this is another advantage to using the credit card.

Such a person can place the maint. fee charge on the credit card and pay it off over time (usually with an APR of at least 18% if it isn't paid off within 25 days).

That said, the credit card company pays the H.O.A. right away, and the H.O.A. doesn't have to worry about dealing with potential bad checks or non payments.

So, from an H.O.A. standpoint credit card payments may not be all that bad.

I'm sure others will have opinions.....

It depends on the which Marriott Rewards Visa card you have:

The Marriott Rewards Visa Signature Card (light gray card): "Earn 3 points for every $1 spent at Marriott locations."

The Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Signature Card (dark gray card): "Earn 5 points for every $1 spent at Marriott locations."

Being new at this, I am not sure what the "addtl expenses incurred to owners" is all about...? However, whatever it is, I only have 34,000 points, and I have the premier card. So...I'm going for the 5,000 pts.

Those "addtl expenses incurred to owners" would be the small percentage of the MF charge that the Credit Card company keeps...
 
I am usually very careful with my money and was concerned in the past about the extra expense to the HOA by paying MF with my Marriott VISA. It really does bother me that it is costing the HOA extra $$. But I just can't resist the offer of 5 points per dollar on my MF payment!

I try to redeem myself by paying the MF at the earliest opportunity. Then the HOA at least has the use of the money as soon as possible. I charged them to my card the same day I received an email that they were available to be paid online.

Statement has already closed and almost 11,000 new points are now in my account!
 
Simple example,

MF = $1000
# of intervals = 2500
CC cut = 4%

$1000 * 2500 * .04 = $100,000

So, the timeshare owners association would get $2.4 million instead of $2.5 million.
 
Affinity cards don't have such a high transaction fee when it comes to the partner company. In other words, the fee maybe 4% when used at the local gas station, but somewhat less than that when used at the partner company.

I use my visa. That said I would not be upset to see a ?% fee to reimburse the visa fees, or raise MF's by ?% and offer a discount for paying in cash, or give a credit to be used at the resort for those paying in cash.

Personally, I am going to pay for mine with cc and get the points. It's not that I don't CARE about the extra fees, because I do, but I see it this way: If you could reach EVERYONE and tell them that if they pay with a cc, there will be extra fees incurred, the people who have no choice but to pay with cc and defer the payment can't change what they are doing, and the people who can pay with cash, but want the points, WON't change what they are doing. You will get a tiny handful who see things the way you do, not enough to significantly change the amt of fees, and you will be sitting there with essentially the same amount of fees as before, wishing you had gone for points.

I get your point, really I do, but it's kind of the same way I feel when I take my kids to a play area and the rules read: Please take off your shoes, no jumping off the equipment, you must be no taller than THIS, all children must be supervised. And what you see instead is a half a dozen kids that are wearing their shoes, jumping off the equipment, all too big to be there in the first place, and the parents are nowhere to be seen. Moral of the story: people are going to do whatever they want.

Sometimes I get tired of feeling like the only one following the rules!:wall:
 
I agree with Ray, maybe those using credit cards should be charged the Visa service fee. Probably closer to 2-1/2%.
 
If I'm offered a discount to pay in cash I usually always will take that option. I would pay my MF in cash if the HOA offered a discount. In the future that may be the case.

But at this point it's the same $$ if I pay cash or charge it to my Marriott VISA. The VISA gives me 5 points per dollar and I just can't resist the opportunity for the MR points. Guess I'm a points junkie, probably need rehab or something!

I'm the same as you. Offer a discount to the cash-paying owners or increase the fees by the surcharge amount to those who pay using credit. That give the owners a chance to choose if the points value is worth the cash difference (depending on the m/f amount,) and puts the responsibility for the surcharge fee onto those who benefit from it.
 
The fee at most to Marriott to process a CC is 2%, probably much less.
 
I always use my Marriott cc to pay MFs, have not seen a discount offered for check. But would still use cc

How does someone get the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Signature Card? Do I have to wait for Marriott/Chase to send me an offer? Can I call to inquire?
How much is the annual fee?

The fee annual fee is $65. I would shut down my other MR card since I really don't want to pay for 2 MR cards.

I must ask those that already have this card, and it sounds like most of the die hards out there already have the Premier card.

Is this really worth the $65 annual fee.

Going to look at Flyertalk as well since there is a BIG MR reward tribe over there.

DH & I both have the premier card and are anniversary dates are close together. So once a year I have 2 category 1-5 certificates to use for free hotel stays. This year we used our certs at the Marriott Baltimore Waterfront property, rates were $349 that weekend. We've also scored lots of MR points this past year by using our cards. So it was definitely worth $65 to us!!
 
Black Card

I don't mean to divert this thread but we also used our "Black Card" MR Visa certificate to stay at the Marriott Waterfront this summer on our way to our week at Manor Club . What a great start to our vacation. We are very glad we have the Marriott Rewards Visa. It is well worth the yearly $65.00 fee.

the deal I got for the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa (black card) I found on the marriott rewards website. It was thru chase. It gives you 30,000 bonus pts after you spend $1000, and I think you have 3 mos to spend it. I just got the card two months ago. You also get the rewards cert that you can use on a cat 1-4 hotel. You get this same cert on your anniv date every year. I don't know anything about a 45,000 pts link, but if you get the card in time before you are due to pay your maint fees you can pay them with your black card and get another 5,000 pts!
