fireworks NYC

We have never been to NYC for the fourth of July, what or where is the best place to view them?

Before people chime in, I just want to mention that this year, for the first time in about thirty years, the Macy's fireworks will be on the Hudson River (that is, the New Jersey side, yaaaaay!) rather than the East River (that is, the outer boroughs side). So the spots that have worked for years and years will not work this year.

That said, if you go to the Macy's website or a New York tourism website, there should be a map that shows viewing areas.

Thanks Richard, that gave me everything I need to know.
I cant believe 40,000 shells in 26 minutes, that sounds unreal!
We are really looking forward to that, I have never seen that many fireworks, maybe in al my life!

Thanks everyone for the info, we had a fantastic time.
The fireworks were just too much!
Six barges in the middle of the Hudson river, all going up at once!
I have never seen one show as good as any one of the six, but combined!
It is terrible, I am spoiled now!
Weather perfect!
Food , excellent!
Company, fantastic!
