We will be staying at Woodstone at Massanutten in July. What is the resort and waterpark like. Is it worth buying the activity card if we don't golf? What type of things are there to do for kids (12 & 15) in the area. Is there any type of gemstone mining (hunting/digging) in the general area. Thanks for your help.

Massanutten is a ski resort that added golf & the waterpark & various fun activities as a way of making itself into a year-round destination resort. It has golf, a full schedule of class-style recreational activities, evening entertainment, & I don't know what-all.

Harrisonburg VA is just 20 miles or so up the road -- not far to go for loading up with groceries & anything you need, also for restaurants & other shopping.

We went for the Activities Cards because there were plenty of fun things offered that we wanted to try during our Massanutten week. But we didn't buy cards. That would have been too simple. We signed up for the on-site timeshare tour, for which the promised freebies turned out to be 2 Activity Cards. (The timeshare sales pitch was entertaining it itself, but that's another story.)

If you are going in July, save some money and drive up the road to Kings Dominion for the day. The waterpark is nice, but I only am willing to pay that much money when it's winter and no where else to go.

Also, don't purchase the activity card unless you plan to do a lot of the onsite activities that cost $$

We usually buy the activity cards - check out the resort website and you can see what discounts/activities are there. massresort.com

We have taken the grandkids to Shenandoah Caverns, Frontier Culture Museum, Hall of Valor/New Market Battlefield - all free with the card. Magic show and comedy show are usually half off. My husband does golf and ski, and the waterpark we always enjoy. ALso a discount on horseback riding, sometimes on mini-golf. And one of my favorites - the discount on the wine tours :)

For kids (nothing to do with the activity card) they have kickball and other sports in the field near the playground that are led by the activity staff that my grandkids REALLY enjoyed. This was just friendly "neighborhood" type of playing with close supervision - great for all the younger kids who really did not know what they were doing!!

According to Mapquest, King's Dominion is 2 hours and 14 minutes from Massanutten. Put in even the slightest delay and you are talking at least 5 hours driving time.

Granted, King's Dominion has a LOT more than the Waterpark, but I doubt that you would save any money by going there. Their web site does not list individual day ticket prices for this year yet.

To me, that much driving time does not make for a relaxing vacation day.
