We took Trilogy's all day Lanai trip on Friday. Our friends had 25% off adult tickets, but still it was $550 for Adria and I and our 7 and 5 yo kids.
We felt it was worth it though.

We left Lahaina at 10 and motored across the channel. The staff sails the boat and waits on you hand and foot, and the cinnamon rolls they served were out of this world.
We got off the boat around noon and headed over to the beach. You can walk the 1/4 mile or take a van shuttle. I recommend the van. There is nothing in particular to see, and it was pretty hot for the kids and us toting our gear.
The beach was very pretty and the perfect combo of sandy swimming beach with small breakers and fantastic snorkeling further out. There were also tide pools to the left in the lava rock that the kids enjoyed poking around in. You can bring your own snorkel gear or use what they provide which was of decent quality and repair. The only complaint was that they require you to wear a flotation device, some if which were inflatable vests, which I tied around my waist like a sweatshirt.
Trilogy includes an optional guided tour of part of the island up to Lanai City. I highly recommend it. It was about 1.5 hrs including a stop at a general store. It was a great way to get a glimpse of the climate, residents and geography of the island. To me, at 1500ft elevation in the pines, it almost had a small town Lake Tahoe feel. Plus it was a nice little nap for the kids. ;-)
After we returned at 3pm, the crew provided an excellent early dinner of BBQ chicken, noodles, salad and non-alcohol beverages.
We got back in the boat at about 4pm, and motored out for about 30min around the southern tip of Lanai and found ourselves in a stiff wind from the NW, so up went the sails. Their big cats can fly on a close reach in 15kts!
The wind lasted about 30min, and they had to fire the diesels again, but it was a lot of fun. The crew takes sailing very seriously and it was entertaining to watch them.
The crew made several diversions to watch whales and spinners over cocktails on the return as well.

It was an expensive day (by our standards), but well worth the time and money.

Mahalo Trilogy!

I did this years ago (like probably about 35 years ago), it was a recommendation from a friend of my mom's. At the time it was a completely family owned and run business right down to the cinnamon rolls served in the morning. I still think it is one of the best excursion trips I've ever taken. Back then the big hotels weren't on the island. I recommended it to several friends and no one has been disappointed.

You were so lucky to be able to sail even for about half an hour only. We had no wind either way. We did this quite a few years ago and went snorkeling too. It was a combo ticket so it included Ulalena too which we also enjoyed.

This is one of the nicest trips to take and we recommend it to anyone but it is expensive and certainly when you have children too. Nice to read that the crew is just as attentive today as they were then. They really enjoy what they do.

+1, from 3 or 4 years ago -- we did it in January or February, and saw so many whales on the way to and from Lanai (and the skipper took the time to follow and get in good position for watching) that we cancelled the whale-watching expedition scheduled for later in our stay! Of course, for that YMMV, but even without that plus the trip is one of our best overall excursion memories of Maui. A good one for younger kids, too, who would be bored by the Molokini trip (another favorite, for the snorkeling)

I agree that it's a really nice trip. Instead of doing the Lanai tour, my daughter and I opted to do a zodiak ride around the shore of Lanai. That was a ton of fun.

It was expensive, but you get fed two full meals, which would be worth at least $40 or so if you went to a restaurant on Maui.

I also remember the bbq being spectacular. And the ice cream on the way back was a great touch, too.

Great times!

We loved this trip too, and I just wanted to add that the dinner is a lot more substantial than the OP makes it sound. ;) They feed you very well on this trip - 3 meals + snacks and beverages.

What he described as "noodles," is actually a substantial "stir fry with noodles," and I believe we also had salad, vegetables, dinner rolls, and desert, in addition to the barbequed chicken. It's a complete meal, all you can eat, and quite delicious.

Just wondering. Have taken this trip 4 or 5 times, the last about 2001. Do they still sell the lunch or dinner as the best BBQ seagull?

The meal is substantial and I speak from a big guy basis. It is also very good.

It's been awhile, but I only remember 2 meals + snacks. Breakfast, which was juice, fruit and bagels? And lunch, which was the bbq spread. Drinks and snacks were served throughout the day and ice cream was served on the way back.

Did I forget a meal?

It depends on what time of day you go - we had lunch and dinner

This is the same as what we got. However for breakfast we had fresh baked cinnamon rolls. I also think when we went they were only doing one trip per day, and that was the morning one. I remember having to be at the dock around 6 a.m. (or maybe it just felt that early). We were served breakfast on the trip over, did some snorkeling, then came back to the area where the boat was for a bar-be-que lunch. After lunch either more snorkeling or a tour of the island (which we opted for). After that we sailed back. Got back into Lahaina around 4 p.m.
