We took Trilogy's all day Lanai trip on Friday. Our friends had 25% off adult tickets, but still it was $550 for Adria and I and our 7 and 5 yo kids.
We felt it was worth it though.
We left Lahaina at 10 and motored across the channel. The staff sails the boat and waits on you hand and foot, and the cinnamon rolls they served were out of this world.
We got off the boat around noon and headed over to the beach. You can walk the 1/4 mile or take a van shuttle. I recommend the van. There is nothing in particular to see, and it was pretty hot for the kids and us toting our gear.
The beach was very pretty and the perfect combo of sandy swimming beach with small breakers and fantastic snorkeling further out. There were also tide pools to the left in the lava rock that the kids enjoyed poking around in. You can bring your own snorkel gear or use what they provide which was of decent quality and repair. The only complaint was that they require you to wear a flotation device, some if which were inflatable vests, which I tied around my waist like a sweatshirt.
Trilogy includes an optional guided tour of part of the island up to Lanai City. I highly recommend it. It was about 1.5 hrs including a stop at a general store. It was a great way to get a glimpse of the climate, residents and geography of the island. To me, at 1500ft elevation in the pines, it almost had a small town Lake Tahoe feel. Plus it was a nice little nap for the kids. ;-)
After we returned at 3pm, the crew provided an excellent early dinner of BBQ chicken, noodles, salad and non-alcohol beverages.
We got back in the boat at about 4pm, and motored out for about 30min around the southern tip of Lanai and found ourselves in a stiff wind from the NW, so up went the sails. Their big cats can fly on a close reach in 15kts!
The wind lasted about 30min, and they had to fire the diesels again, but it was a lot of fun. The crew takes sailing very seriously and it was entertaining to watch them.
The crew made several diversions to watch whales and spinners over cocktails on the return as well.
It was an expensive day (by our standards), but well worth the time and money.
