My wife & I were interested in spending part of the day at the Royal Hacienda where we are members, but during a week that we don't have membership of. We will be staying elsewhere, but have a free day. Spend the day on the beach, order a few drinks and lunch. I inquired with the resort to see if they would issue us a day pass so we could use pesos instead of our room card, since it wouldn't be active that week. Their response was a "no".

Perhaps I'm jaded these days by the decisions our resorts have been making lately, but then again, I may me missing something.

Since we're members there, would be spending our money there, and would not be utilizing their resources such as towels, villa, or anything other than a rest room during our day visit, I'm at a loss at why they wouldn't allow us to visit.

What am I missing?

The resorts are set up with the resources for those who are staying at them. What if everyone did what you are proposing? Whould there be enough palapas, chairs, umbrellas, etc., for everyone that is staying there? I'm sorry, but the resorts are not day spas, or beach clubs, and I agree with the policy.

Thanks for the reply. On any given week, how many members do you think wish to visit the resorts during a week they don't have membership to? The reason I ask is your reply suggests the number would be substantial, and would therefore overstress their resources. To be clear, I'm of the opposite opinion, and believe the number in any given week would be minimal, if there would be any at all. Further, it's no secret that the Royal Resorts are struggling with revenues these days. Having paying visitors would help offset this a little bit, no?

I tend to agree with OP. I don't know the reason behind Royal Resorts policy, but I know there are some Caribbean TS resorts, notably those associated with hotels that issue towels and beach passes to cruise passengers in port for the day. I assume they charge for this and it doesn't seem to have created a problem with crowding.

I own at a resort that allows day use of the facilitis. This is subject to room to accomodate day guests.

I can understand their option to limit day use if the place is crowded. If it's not crowded I can use the grills, pool, beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, bikes and towels.

Day use is one of the things some people consider when buying a TS.

I understand what you are saying, but to me, allowing day use is opening up Pandora's box. I just do not want to deal with day visitors and crowds when I am staying at the Royals. I have noticed it is already more prevelant at the Haciendas with the members from the Cancun Royals doing day visits, and to increase it with people not even staying at the Royals would just make it crowded.

Now, not to say you personally are not the most lovely person ever with whom I would love to have visit on a day pass. :). I just don't want the box opened, so to speak.

We own at the Sands and the Haciendas. Last February we stayed at Villa del Palmar. They have a HORRIBLE beach and I missed my RS. We tried to get a day pass-- we were told NO. The Marriott timeshares in Hilton Head allow day passes for owners and there is never a problem. Lee this is the 1st time ever that I agree with you.

I just got back from Harborside at Atlantis. They charge the cruise ship people $125 per person to visit for the day. They give out special wrist bands ( oh no! More wrist bands!) so the guards at the pools, beaches and casino know to allow them in. The day the cruise ship was in, the beach was VERY crowded, which is not to say that would happen at any of the royals, but it might be another way for them to make changes that diminish the exclusivity of ownership like they did with AI.

It's important to remember that your membership is specifically for the specific weeks you own. Other than that, we are all persona non-grata, baby!

Such a 'perk' would also allow visitors to use all the resort and all it's facilities for the price of whatever profit is being made on a meal and a drink or two (or five) :) In other words....for a negligible amount.

I would check into the availability of a day pass at any of the beachside hotels nearby.

How So? How are we "using the resort"? What "facilities"? Toilet water? What other "facilities" would we be using? And how would we be using them?

I disagree.

I think it is important for a resorts HOA to provide as much to it's owners as the budget will allow. A resort with happy owners who feel like actual owners rather than an occasional guest will be better off in the long run.

I own at a resort, Tropic Shores, that gives plenty to it's owners. Because we are happy owners we were able to collect 94.1% of all fees owed this year. The entire resort has been sold out since spring break and has no openings until week 50. Our fees have been kept the same for a few years now.

One of the many selling points of this resort is the day use privileges. There are many more and I will list them when I'm ready to sell a unit.

One nice thing they did was increase the weeks eligible for use by the people owning in the "preferred" float period. Six additional weeks were added to the list they can reserve in.

The resort is very aggressive when owners don't pay. Anyone not paying in 60 days is turned over to collections and eventually foreclosed on. This gets the units into hands of willing owners.

I was told by another owner who contacted the resort that there is a waiting list of 80 people wanting to buy some of the units.

My point is, the more we are provided, the easier it is to keep the units in the hands of willing buyers. And because of that our fees are kept as low as possible. Day use is a biggie for many people.

I own at a resort which allows day use - you have to go to the Front Desk for an ID bracelet only to the owners & family and check your ownership status. They must have a limit to "day use guests" as they seem to check something else on the computer. I believe there is a "class" of owners - fixed deeded weeks owners. Now, I am known by many front desk employees - they still check the stuff on the computer. And I have never been turned down for access.

Two of my timeshares allow day use. They verify ownership, welcome you with a smile and give you a guest wrist band. The others I am not sure about as I have never inquired but I know I would be disappointed if they did not allow it.

Allowing cruise ship guests access is much different then allowing owners access. There are hundreds of people on a cruise ship, the chances that there are more than 20 owners in any area asking for a day pass is slim.
