My wife & I are thinking of taking the ferry from CT to Port Jeff. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect. We will only be going for about 6-8 hours. Is there enough to do and see (shops/galleries) within walking distance of the ferry terminal? Restaurants/ etc. Just looking for a nice day trip get away. Thanks

Yes, there will be enough to do. The ferry ride is very nice - though quite breezy. No need for a car on the NY side. In fact, better to be a pedestrian on the ferry. It's easy, just walk off the ferry, cross the street, and begin exploring the small shops and nice restaurants.

It is a very nice way to spend a day!

Depending on what you are expecting you may be disappointed. There are some restaurants and a bunch of small shops. My family and I go maybe once a year as its local, but I doubt most would find it very interesting enough to fill 6-8 hours.

I think it makes a very nice day trip. I am originally from LI, now live in Virginia. Whenever we go back home (once every couple years) we spend a day in Port Jeff. Nice little shops, Thomas Kinkade Gallery, look at the boats at the marina, have dinner - nothing exciting - but a very pleasant little town.

I live about 5 minutes away from Port Jefferson. I love going down port an hour or two. There isn't a ton of things to do, but if it doesn't take too much of an effort to get there, it could make for a nice afternoon. There are plenty of restaurants. I always wish they'd get some better shops in there. There are a few nice shops, but not enough to spend hours window shopping.

If you live close to the ferry and it is not a big trip, then go for it. It is always pleasant to ride the ferry on a nice day. There is a nice little theater in town called Theater Three. Check out their website (theaterthree.com) and see if there is a show you might enjoy while you're there. They usually are very nice productions and the tickets are reasonable. That would kill some time.

Then you could spend an hour or two walking around. There are ice cream shops, and a sweet shop.

There is an excellent brick oven pizza place called The Pie. That would be a great place for lunch. For dinner, Pace's Steak House is very good, although a little pricey. Pasta Pasta is a nice neuvo italian restaurant and of course there are plenty of little sea food joints.

I should have said we plan to spend 6-8 hours on the trip including the ferry time. We will do some shopping. My wife likes to browse in all types of shops. She also collects Thomas Kinkade so she will enjoy that.

I'm looking at the Wave restaurant at Danfords for either lunch or an early dinner. I believe they changed the name from 24 American Bistro. It should be a nice relaxing day just to get away.

Thanks for the help.

Danfords is very nice, although I haven't eaten there in years. Enjoy your afternoon.
