My across the street neighbors went to Puerto Penasco Mayan Palace over spring break and I asked him to check out the Grand Mayan and the new lazy river. He just came over and brought me a flash drive with some pictures. I uploaded them to my SmugMug account and here is the link to look at them.

As you can see, the lazy river is not yet open. They were told 2-3 more weeks. There is a new pool very close to the beach with a lot of white umbrellas.

The Grand Mayan is on the far side of the property close to the sales office building. He said the building was not open for full occupancy - just a few units on a couple of floors. There is something huge at the top that is not finished and he did not find out what it was going to be. He said they went over to the GM and asked to look at the model or a unit and they did let them do that. He was impressed with the dipping pool on the deck. Rocky Point MP is the only Mayan Resort that he has been to and they had a great time. They have 4 boys from 5 - 21 and all loved it.

He did not take the update/sales "opportunity", so did not find out what the big center building is going to be. I don't think they are planning GL there, but maybe GB??? The infrastructure looks larger than GM. Who knows, we have seen them tear buildings down and start over at PP. They were working on this one back in 2011 when we took or neighbors the first time.

I was there in November of last year, looks like they have made a lot of progress since then. Nice and quiet resort if you don't mind being isolated because it sure is a long way from anything (other restaurants, etc.). Most days I would jog along the beach for a couple miles on both sides of the resort and rarely saw anyone else on the beach. The resort does seem to nickle and dime you to death (at least for non-owners) charging extra for internet access and to use the fitness center. Seems a waste to have such a nice fitness center that seemed to go unused by anyone during my stay. Nice and expensive golf course on the resort but can get good discounts if willing to sit through the sales presentation which I can confirm is pure torture.

Any idea when commercial flights from Las Vegas to Puerto Peñasco will resume? Is driving still the only way to get there?

I did a search on both Orbitz and Expedia from Vegas and PHX and no flights were found for several different dates that I checked. Frontier had been the only airline that flew in to the PP airport and it is no longer on their list of choices for airports.

I was actually surprised that any airline was flying there on a regular basis when it was announced last year. Puerto Penasco is a small town and even Frontier just flew in on check-in/check-out days. One plane in and out 2 or 3 days a week is not a revenue generator. Vidanta built the airport and it is close to the MP/GM. The Mayan Palace / Grand Mayan is the only timeshare there, all the other places are small hotels, vacation homes, or condos on Sandy Beach. We have rented condos for a few days before.

Thanks Phyllis, I guess we won't be trying that resort until commercial service begins again. I wanted to do a LV week followed by Puerto Peñasco week. I don't want to try to take a rental car into Mexico from the US.
