So we just did the "workshop" in Pompano, and were told that we could use our Disney and Bluegreen points as phantom (in other words we don't actually transfer them) points along with buying a small amount of points) and achieve silver status. Sounds a bit fishy to me, so thought I'd ask the group if anyone knows if this is true and how it works.

We currently own only resale points through Wyndham - about 157 annually, and the salesman told us we could use one week of Disney, one week of Bluegreen and purchase 105K Wyndham to "get to" the silver status. Thoughts anyone?

There are two version of "PIC". The traditional version allows you to "PIC" up to 2 eligible weeks. Eligibility is based on participation in RCI weeks. RCI points resorts are ineligible for this "traditional" PIC. This type of PIC is "permanent" so long as the resort interval remains eligible and you deposit the week each year. The points count toward VIP whether or not you deposit the weeks for points, but what makes this at least somewhat attractive is that there are potential 3BR pic weeks that produce very low cost Wyndham points (up to 508K points with a MF of under $1200).

I believe what you are referring to is "PIC Express". This allows you to "count" any type of week, regardless of eligibility in the traditional PIC program, as the equivalent number of points, without actually depositing (or getting the associated Wyndham points). However - two big caveats - PIC Express is time-limited, I believe to 5 years. And of course you don't actually get any Wyndham points out of the deal.

I believe this is a new "hook" Wyndham is using rather than bonus points. It costs them nothing and still leaves you on the hook to buy something else in order to "preserve" your VIP status. Bottom line - not recommended. Developer points are ridiculously overpriced, the VIP status is temporary, and silver status is not very valuable to begin with.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response - pretty much what I suspected. The salesman of course didn't mention that it was a limited time . . . we thought the 25% off points and occasional upgrades might be nice, but it definitely wouldn't be worth it if it was only for a few years.

One of the reasons Silver is not much more valuable than a regular membership is that there are often resort specials that come close to or exceed the Silver discount. In fact I have gotten 30% resort special discounts.

I do like the unlimited housekeeping credits and 4 extra GCs, but that isn't much of a bennie compared to the tens of thousands of dollars I spent to get them. It's really kind of a poor consolation prize to make you feel better about your retail purchase IMO.

I would not do the "real" PIC unless it got me to at least the Gold level, and preferably to Platinum, but that is since I am already at 300k eligible points. I could not see doing it from scratch. For that matter, I would never do the "Express" version of PIC.
