I was thinking about booking a stay there and I have a few questions. How loud are the nearby trains in your unit? Is there a quieter area at the resort to try to get your unit in?

Can you take the trains to most of the major tourist attractions in that area? If not, can you take the trains to a nearby bus terminal that would take you to them? I've heard that area is a nightmare for driving if you're not familiar with it.

Is there a fee to use the laundry facilities since there are none in the rooms?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

You should be able to get around on public transportation to all of the popular DC attractions. I've never stayed here but took a tour many years ago. I only live about 30 minutes away from there.

Hi Skipper. If you join TUG, you can read the reviews. The answers to both of your questions are there. Membership is a great value.

There is no fee to use the laundry facilities according to a reviewer who mentioned them.

For some people the trains are loud. Request a courtyard unit for a more quiet night.

1. Ask for a Courtyard View room. It's quieter.

2. The laundry rooms are free to use on each floor.

3. Take the Metro to get around. The station is across the street, and drops you reasonably close to just about everything you'll want to see.

4. Read my extensive review of my stay there from this past June: http://tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212401&highlight=town+alexandria

5. Join TUG. It's the best $15 you'll ever spend. :)

Just a note IMHO this is one of the best Wyndham TS in their system. And I have stayed at over 23 different resorts.

Staff is wonderful, they had free hot chocolate or cider in the winter, popcorn, great theatre room. We could not hear the trains from a courtyard or street view units. Free parking which is a big plus in DC.

Old Town Alexandria is becoming one of the more difficult resorts to book. Event weeks are impossible. Three or four years ago, I could book multiple reservations (weekends or full weeks) for the Cherry Blossom Festival. No longer. Gotta be an owner.

It is a great resort in a great location -- King Street Metro across the street, Amtrak station within walking distance, Washington National Airport two Metro stops away, free shuttle that runs from the King St. Metro to the Potomac River about a mile away.

We live thirteen miles away and have spent weekends (easy to get to Washington Nationals baseball games) and full weeks there (work is only three Metro stops away).

Old Town Alexandria trumps National Harbor in just about every way for people wanting to see the sights.

Ain't that the truth? After several years of unsuccessful searches in RCI, I finally set up an Ongoing Search, and wasted ANOTHER year without success. Tuggers finally wised me up to the fact that OTA is rarely deposited, and an exchange is nearly impossible to get. So much for the lies RCI told me!

In stepped a wonderful Tugger, who was able to arrange a reservation for me, in exchange for me making a reservation for them with my RCI deposit. We each gave the other what we wanted, and it was a win-win all around. I was finally able to have the excellent DC vacation I was after.

If someone is looking to stay at OTA, I'd strongly recommend a private rental or direct exchange. Waiting for "the system" to work is a waste of time.
