Timeshare Blackball List

I'm starting this thread so people can post the timeshare resorts they would like to place on the "Blackball" list. In other words, timeshares that they would highly recommend Tugger's NOT to purchase for various reasons including special assessments, run-down resorts, horrible management companies, etc.

I will start this list with the Point at Poipu in Hawaii because I read on TUG they have a HUGE special assessment coming up for building repairs and water intrusion.

Please list the name of the resort you are "Blackballing" the location of the resort, and the reason why you are "Blackballing" it.

Hopefully, this will be a helpful and informative thread.

I would be careful of doing this.

Writing reviews, both good and bad, can serve this purpose as well and in the proper forum.

Also, the respective threads are a good place to post about upcoming assessments and management changes.

Respectfully, I don't think you should blackball a resort based on what you read about a resort where you don't own.

I'm not defending the Point at Poipu, but I don't think you've considered all the ramifications of starting a "blackball list."

Remember that the owners at the resort OWN the resort - not the management company. By blackballing the resort - you are hurting owners far more than management.

For instance - It's not management that may want to sell or give away their timeshare - it's OWNERS. So when you tell people not to buy there - that doesn't hurt management - it only hurts owners.

I think it's more productive to discuss the merits and problems in the resort specific thread that already exists, rather than create a blackball list.

I was hoping a post like this one would help save people from purchasing timeshares with huge special assessments that aren't disclosed and other issues with a timeshare.

If you don't think this is appropriate, please delete it because I'm not trying to cause trouble to anyone. I was hoping this would be helpful and informative to Tugger's, but maybe that's not the case.

I had recommended quite a while ago that TUG start a category that people could use to post special assessments on timeshares. It would be SO much easier for people to find this information if this was a category, and it would save a lot of people from having financial issues with their timeshares and potentially ruining thier credit.

Special assessments are a serious issue in timesharing (espcially these days), so I think it's a VERY important topic.

The hazard isn't resorts that have (or had) special assessments - it's the resorts that are chronically underfunded and are going to need special assessments. Ironically, many of those resorts are often touted as well-managed because they've kept their annual fees low.

A thread that identifies such resorts would be of value. But I'm not sure how you get that to happen.

I think that you are a well meaning person with good intent here and your concern has merit, but a dedicated blacklist or blackballing thread could be dicey and possibly unfair IMHO.

I do like the idea of a special assessment thread that posts objective data from owners or similar.

One mans trash is another mans treasure

I recently bought 2 weeks at a property that just imposed a $1580 special assessment. It is my hope that the place will come out of their renovation, a better place and less likely to need another special assessment anytime soon

My wife and I once wanted to go on an Hawaiian cruise. By accident I found a website by the name of www.norwegiancruiselinessuck.com I went to the site and read what the disgruntled posters had to say. I did more research and concluded we should go on the norwegian Hawaiian cruise. Turns out it was one of the best cruise decisions/experiences we ever made. The cruise was simply exquisite. Many of the negative posts never popped up. :shrug:

I guess their expectations were not the same as ours. One needs to be careful when starting negative/informative posts. It is far better to research well that which one is looking at doing. Gather as much data as possible and then make an informative decision.
