Is anybody else finding that access to articles on islandpacket.com now requires that you subscribe? I don't know when it started charging but I can't click on any links from the home page without getting the pop-up. It's 99cents for the first month trial with auto-renewals at $8.95/mo, or $99/yr up-front, or free if you have a subscription to the print edition (which I don't.)

Hmmmmm. I really like this site to keep tabs on what's happening on Hilton Head, and occasionally I link things here on TUG. But I'm just not sure if I want to subscribe for the 6-8 times I check it each month. Any suggestions for another - free! - site with local news? Thanks!

*It's not that I have a problem with them changing to a pay service - our newspapers have to respond to the changing times. It's just that I don't know if these rates work for me for the little bit of access I want.

Sue,
I just went on with no problem and no request to subscribe. I clicked on several links and was able to see everything. Good luck.

I was able to get on the site as well with no requests for subscription. They may have a IP address tracker/counter so that request will pop up after you have accessed the site x number of times. To get past that, open up an 'in private' or 'incognito' window/tab, then go to the site. You will be hiding your IP address & then the paper cant track how many times you have accessed the site.

I use that method to read many newspapers - YMMV.

No problems here -- links are working with no charge for subscription.

Perhaps you could try another browser. I use a chromebook and find that I sometimes need to toggle between chrome and firefox to get some websites to work properly. Also, have you cleared the cache?
