I am curious whether anyone has had success selling their timeshare at Los Abrigados Resort and Spa since it was taken over by Diamond Resorts. I don't mean selling a week of time. I mean selling your deeded right permanently. If so, would you share the experience? Thanks!

I'm willing to expand the question. Have you successfully sold a timeshare that you purchased (not just a year - the entire purchase) after it was transferred to Diamond Resorts? If so, how did you do it?

I successfully gave always a EOY deeded Los Abrigados week to another Tugger through the Bargin Basment earlier this year. I paid for the transfer fees (using a firm recommended here). The deed transfer went well and only took a few weeks for the deed to be recorded in the new owners name, but it took MONTHS for DRI to do the internal transfer on their end (although they cashed the $250 transfer fee pretty quickly).

Thanks for the response. So, you gave it away and paid for the transfer fees? That's not really "selling" it, is it? I wonder if that is the only path forward. You unloaded the yearly fees you were paying. I suppose that's something if you were not using it.

I picked up a couple of inexpensive Marriott's off ebay ($1) and found that they and I.I. were much better traders for our needs (not to mention within driving distance) so I just wanted to get out from the maintenance fees. I was not going to use it, or RCI anymore so it did not make sense to keep it. I still have unused RCI TPU's that I need to figure out if I can even use at this point before they expire and if it would even be worth it to extend them.

Okay. I was hoping to not take huge financial hit just to stop paying the yearly fees. I assume you were okay with that loss.

If you don't tell RCI that you no longer own an RCI TS, they won't know. Whether or not you choose to continue to pay your RCI membership is also up to you. But if you do, you can use your TPUs and buy Last Calls and Extra Vacations for cash as long as you are an RCI member.

You weren't REALLY thinking you'd make a dent in what you spent on this did you?

A quick look at eBay completed auctions for these showed 3 that sold for $1 to $1.51, one recently brought $15.99 and several drew no bids. The seller paid all closings on the successful ones and had extra weeks included.

Best wishes.

I was trying to come up with a nice way of asking the question, it seemed clear the OP though he could recover some of his sunk costs

Since I had owned this for more than 15 years, it was inexpensive (at least in terms of what it would probably cost me to buy DRI points today or any other retail purchase for that matter) and I had already gotten enough use out of the timeshare to recoup in the investment, I did not consider giving it away as a financial loss. In fact, just the opposite as it allowed me to pick up another EOY Marriott to replace it that actually gives me twice the time since it is 2 bedroom lock off unit (vs. the one bedroom EOY Los Abrigados unit).

Will keep th RCI membership until I use the TPU's or they expire and let the membership laspe (not that much time left on it anyway). Out of curiosity, can someone donate or rent TPU's to someone else?

I am the original poster. I suppose you need to say gullible original poster. Aren't we all, if we think that there is any resale value to recoup even a small portion of the original investment? According to what I've been reading, even pennies on a dollar is "pie in the sky". That being said, why bother to try to sell the "deed" at all? What is the harm if at some point you just stop paying the yearly assessment and say " the heck with it" ?

Donate - not really, however you can book something and donate it to "make a wish", but you are still paying the fees to do it.

Rent - Not openly, but they can be transferred to a different account for a fee, $49, I believe. If you want to be reimbursed it would have to be on the down low, possibly buying a pet rock at an inflated price.;) A recent tugger found it too cumbersome to rent the TPU's, so he gave them away instead. Personally I would transfer them to someone, if they paid the fee and donated $XX to a worthy charity.

Nothing, if you don't mind a foreclosure and collections on your financial history. Seriously, a default would result in a credit hit. Otoh, if you have no plans to buy anything on credit for several years, you can put a rebuttal letter in your credit report stating that the arrearage reported was for maintenance on a worthless timeshare it may not be too bad. Just means all the other owners at the resort get to see their MF go up to pay for yours and the other deadbeats weeks. Someone has to pay to keep the place up.

Interesting about the credit hit. I'll remember that, thanks. As for others fees going up, when I look at what I pay for my maintenance, it seems as though its the same price as I would pay for the weekly rental if it was listed as a "passport week" or "excess week" or whatever the organization calls it. They get their money. Its hard to feel sorry for them when you consider the thousands of dollars up front you pay for the privilege of renting a week. Seems like all you really get is a higher likelyhood of getting the property you want. And, with points, that's far from guaranteed.

Selling Diamond Resort time shares

I am helping my sister sell her time shares in Ridge of Sedona and Premiere Vacations now owned by Diamond Resort. I contacted Diamond Resort to ask them how to sell her time shares. Here is their respond:

Thank you for contacting Diamond Resorts. My name is Veronica, and I am a
Specialist in Hospitality Management (HM) at Diamond Resorts. We recently
received an email regarding your week.

While we are saddened that you are considering selling your ownership, we
do understand that life circumstances can, and do, often necessitate change
and understand that this is not for everyone. Unfortunately, Diamond
Resorts does not have a buyback, resale or relinquishment program available
at this time. If you are interested in resale, where you may receive some
financial gain, I hope the following information will be of assistance to
you.

Here is the information regarding resale. In looking for a reseller,
rental or listing company, here are a few tips:
• Avoid companies that charge an up-front fee. Most resellers, rentals
or listing companies make the majority of their income from up-front fees.
• Check references! Reputable resale, rental and listing companies do
exist, but the key to finding them is to take the time to check them out.
In addition to the above, in order to transfer ownership, the following is
necessary:
• All fees and dues must be current.
• Generally, transfers takes approximately six to eight weeks to
complete once all documents are received.
• The documentation needed to complete the transfer is specific to the
type of sale being completed.
• Once you have found a buyer, you simply need contact our Customer
Service Representatives and they can provide further instruction or forward
you the correct documentation to complete the transfer.
• There will be a transfer processing fee of $250.00-$295.00 per
contract that is required at the time of the transfer.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments, or simply
need further direction.

Sincerely,
Veronica Dillon
