I'm fairly new to the TS game, having acquired 168k points at Kingsgate from a TUGger a couple of years ago. We avoided an owner seminar our first year, didn't go anywhere last year (but we had pooled them knowing we weren't going anywhere), and attended our first sales pitch as owners this past week.

The sales rep said that while we have points in Wyndham, we don't have all the bells and whistles-perks, etc, because we bought resale. They pushed hard for us to pick up some points to (as the sales person put it) "legalize" the account with Wyndham.

They gave us a story about being able to offset our maintainence fees with perks, being put into an ownership trust or pool (my words, not hers) which would have lower MFs and they wouldn't go up as much each year, as well as a few other benefits.

She pushed hard for an answer and and I told her if I wasn't able to do my due diligence the on,y answer I would give was "no".

Is it worth it to pick up some points through Wyndham to give us access to these programs, or is it a waste of money?

Club Wyndam Access might save you some money each year. You don't own at one of the less expensive resorts in terms of MF's. I doubt it would save you more than $100 or so a year. What they want you to do is trade in and buy more points. So $20,000-$30,000 later you will own maybe 20,000 more points and have an Club access account. So if you don't finance, in 20 or 30 years you might catch up to what you paid in savings. You might also get about $2000 in bonus points for the next year, maybe even 2.

It's all hoey. There job is to find something wrong with your account that buying from them would fix.

If you really wanted Club Access for less than $5000 you could sell/give away what you have and purchase the same number of Club Access points. You are never going to save on MF with the perks unless you are the kind of person who spends $50,000-$100,000 monthly on a CC and then pays it off each month. Any other perks he mentioned would only last for the year or two of bonus points making you temporarily VIP.

While it is true that the year cost and benefit of a retail purchased Club Wyndham may be slightly less than a resale Wyndham points. That savings/benefit will never be able to overcome the HUGE savings of the initial purchase of the points.

You'd be paying ~$30,000 to save a ~ $100 /year.

The salespeople want you to Wyndhamize their commissions checks.

I think the truth is that resale makes the whole timeshare world spin round. Let others with money to burn do the spinning and buy when they've had enough. You really aren't missing much.

If you really want that little MF savings, and Club Access looks attractive to you, buy it off EBay when one shows up. You'll have to pay a few hundred dollars plus closing, and then you'll have to pay to give away Kingsgate, but you still are WAY ahead of paying off the weasels.

At this time CWA contracts are closer to $1/K and going up. So a 203K CWA is probably going to be closer to $2000 rather than hundreds. But I agree with the rest of your statement.

To dispense with a few of the other statements:
1) Credit card - you can get better deals with other credit cards, with 1.5% cashback or more on purchases that you can use for anything, not just Wyndham MF's
2) Ability to use your points to pay your maintenance fees - an absolutely terrible way to use your points, as they pay much less than half of your maintenance fee rate for the points you use in this program. Eligibility for a program that has no value is not something you'd miss!
3) Nightly stays - there is some, not much, value here, and the only benefits among the many listed that you might actually use.
4) VIP - if they give you bonus points you'll have temporary VIP status for approx. 2 1/2 years. The potential discounts/upgrades and savings on RT/HKs will in no way make up for the investment.

Smile, pick up the gift card, and excuse yourself at the 90 minute mark from any presentation... you've already found the truth here at TUG, don't rely on the sales team for anything resembling the "truth".

That sounds like the best advice and tracks with my gut feeling. Thanks for everyone's advice!

There is no such thing as "cleaning/legalizing" a resale account in Wyndham. Unlike some other systems such as DRI or Westgate that limit resale accounts to using only a portion of the system, or restricting resale to limited booking windows, resale points have the exact same access to in-system resorts as do developer points. The only things resale points lack are: 1) the ability to book affiliate or sister-system resorts (in WorldMark), and 2) ability to attain VIP status.

LOL yeah, I meant a penny a point which translates to $10/K.

And you are right, of course. I looked over some closed EBay auctions and they ranged from $8-$12 per K. I was quite surprised they are going for this much. Seemingly anything with Wyndham and a number on the headline, even high MF locations.
