I'm an owner of VDP and thinking of taking the kids and grandkids to Cancun. If you are an owner is the AI mandatory. What is the cost and does it even make sense to use your weeks there and buy AI or would it be better to get a package. I have friends who to not use their weeks for AI resorts because it ends up costing more.

AI is not mandatory for owners. We did not get the AI when there in March but did end up eating most of our meals at the resort since it is isolated. We did go to Walmart for breakfast and some lunch foods; the resort has a shuttle to the grocery store and town if you don't want to rent a car. I believe the AI cost was somewhere around $90/day per adult. We ended up spending nowhere near that much so AI would not have been cost effective for us. We are not big eaters (no appetizers or desserts), DH would have maybe 4 beers a day at restaurants and I had only an occasional glass of wine. lf you read my review, There are more specifics there.
It is a beautiful resort with a great staff.

We exchanged into the property and AI was not mandatory. We go to Cancun 3/4 weeks a year and there are a lot of good restaurants. I though the restaurants at VDP were mediocre and the off property ones were superior. If you want a list send me a PM.

I would definitely take my grand-kids here. I wouldn't do the all inclusive but would stock up on groceries at the costco with the mega next door. Make sure to buy water. The tap water at the resort is clean but does has an odor.

The Palmita has plenty of goodies too.

The Villa del Palmars are all inclusive in regards with II trades. It is crazy to think II would go along with this because the cost of the all inclusive makes a one bed unit cost about $2100 for two people.

Owners can do the all inclusive for a minimum of three days and then purchase single days of all inclusive at their leisure. This give a measure of flexibility in that you could enjoy the all inclusive and then take days off to enjoy other options.

Bill as I said we exchanged in through II and AI was not mandatory. There is not a Mega next door to VDP in Cancun. The property is very isolated.

The mega and the costco are next door to each other in Cancun. Not next to the resort. This is my preferred stock up place.

Last time I was trying to book an II exchange for Villa del Palmar the resorts were mandatory all inclusive for exchange and getaways. Today I see that they are not even mentioning the all inclusive. The resorts must of received alot of bad feedback and dropped the ai.

I own a few of the VDP contracts and for owners it has never been an all inclusive requirement for owners for the last 12 years anyway.

How did the tap water smell on your recent visit. I haven't been here for a couple of years but might head that way this winter.

We were there last year and we always drink bottled water, even at home! I don't remember any odors. I never cook on vacation so I do not stock up at the stores. We went to OXXO to buy water. We own at the Royals and when there I go to the Sorriano grocery store to buy fruit.

We didn't notice any odor to the water in February. My only complaint was that the water in the shower did not get hot, it was warm enough to take a quick shower but that was it.
We will be going back in March.
