What are some really good restaurants, regardless fo cost, in Pittsburgh?

Visiting this weekend and our friend in Pittsburgh (moved to Shadyside from DC) has basically stopped going out to eat because they're not thrilled by the restaurants. I would like to explore a little though.

It doesn't really matter what kind of food (except it can't be just seafood).

Famous Pig-Out Restaurant In Pittsburgh.

I wish I could remember its name. It was 1 of the big-portions eateries featured on a Travel Channel special last year about the Top 10 Pig-Out Restaurants In The USA.

Shux, I could enjoy a coast-to-coast vacation featuring a stop at 9 of out those top 10. (I'd totally skip the 1 featuring oysters -- down in New Orleans, I think.)

I live in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh and although we don't travel into the city much for dinner anymore, there's a lot of good restaurants. Enrico's in Shadyside has been highly recommended but we haven't had the opportunity to get there. For German, Max's Allegheny Tavern located on the North Side is good. Bravo at the Waterfront in Homestead and PFChangs are also good. The pricey Ruth Chris Steak House and Mortons are downtown but far beyond what I would spend for dinner. There are also several restaurants at South Side Works & Station Square along with they 'chain' types. If I can be of more help, please let me know.

Hello! :hi: You might want to try one of the many restaurants on Mount Washington. There is a wonderful view of the city of Pittsburgh. My personal favorites on Mount Washington are the Georgetown Inn and the Shiloh (but the Shiloh does not have a good view of the city from inside the restaurant). Here is a link to an article about some of the restaurants on Mount Washington. Another unique thing about this area of Pittsburgh is that you can ride one of the inclines to get to the top of Mount Washington!

And at the bottom of Mount Washington is Station Square. Station Square is an old rail road station. It has been converted into a lot of shops and restaurants. It houses the largest restaurant in Pittsburgh, the Grand Concourse. It is an excellent place to go for Sunday brunch! Also at Station Square is a Melting Pot (which is not unique to Pittsburgh) and Pittsburgh's Hard Rock Cafe. Here is a link to Station Square:

Someone else mentioned Max's Allegheny Tavern which is located on Pittsburgh's North Side. I agree, it is a great German Restaurant.

The Penn Brewery is another German Restaurant and they brew their own beers. It is also in North Side.

The Church Brew Works is a different kind of restaurant. It is housed in an old church, and they brew their own beers there! I am not a beer drinker, but they say that their beers are excellent. It is located in the Bloomfield/Lawrenceville section of the 'Burgh. Here is their website:

My all-time favorite is the Hyeholde Restaurant. It is in Moon Township, which is in the suburbs of the city. Their food is excellent, but pricey. The atmosphere is very nice. Just take a look at the photos from their website. It looks like an old castle.

And then there is the Primanti Brothers as mentioned above:

If you have any questions, just ask me. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and now live just outside of the city. I hope you have a great time visiting Pittsburgh!

I read the suggestions to my friend. He's been to Primanti Bros and didn't like it. We've been to Enrico's and it's fine for a casual Italian meal. We ended up going to Church Brew Works for lunch and Point Brugge Cafe for dinner. Unfortunately, in both cases, IMO, the beer selection is much better than their food selection. We also took a trip to Wheeling Island casino. The place is packed for a Sunday afternoon full of people who don't know how to gamble. At least half of the players at my blackjack table have no idea what they're doing. While we were at the casino, the alarm at my friend's house went off. He asked his pet sitter to check out his house and she accidentally picked up my car key during the process. Fortunately we called her on Monday morning after half an hour of fruitless searching. I thought their dog (a Bernese Mountain Dog) might've ate my key (one of the switch-blade style keys from Audi). Whew...
