HI, This is my very first post, so hope I do this right. I am desperately trying to get out of my timeshare. A brochure came in the mail today from Great Northern Transfer. A company who will help you get out of your timeshare. Has anyone out there heard of them. I phoned and all they told me was that they are based in California. Help please.

If they ask you for money up front, they are a scam. And I am 99.999% certain that they will.

Yours is a very common inquiry of newbies on this board. If you search this forum using search terms such as "upfront" or even "scam", you will see literally dozens of situations such as yours. If you read some of those threads, you will learn much -- and protect yourself from this type of situation.

Desperation Is Their Middle Name.

I am desperately trying to get out of my timeshare.
Those various "exit" & "relief" & "solution" companies know that -- & their biz plan is based on separating desperate people from their money.

Click here for an illustrative hypothetical nightmare scenario.

Thank you so much. It sounds exactly like what I was about to do. and by the way I was scammed twice in the past. I now am supposed to pay for renovation fees, but I want out. Thank so much for the warning.

You can post info about your timeshare on the Bargains Forum here if you just want to give away your timeshare to be rid of it. Offer to pay the closing costs or transfer fees and if someone wants it, you'll spend less than the scam companies want to charge you.

If you really want to get rid of it, put it on Ebay. Especially if you're willing to pay the closing costs, somebody will give a dollar or ten for it most likely....

Please consider giving it away to a private individual who can use it, before you spend a cent with a company like this.

Why?
-You can give it away yourself for a much lower cost.
-You can control the transfer process to make sure it is truly transferred out of your name.
-You won't have to deal with companies that may or may not be Legit.
-You can transfer it to a private individual who will be happy to have it for their own use.
-You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you ended your ownership legally and ethically.

There are two places on TUG where you can give away your TS's for free (no charge for the Ads.) There are other cheap and free sites on the internet, as well.

TUG Marketplace - the only cost is your TUG membership - $15 (List it for $1 and it will automatically go in the Bargain Basement Ads.)

Bargain Deals - Totally FREE! - just write a simple post with all the pertinent info. In your post, include the following info.:
-resort name
-unit size
-season owned
-maintenance fee
-current reservations

To make it more attractive I would:

1) Pay 2010 (and possibly 2011) maintenance fees and don't ask for reimbursement.

2) Pay for the title transfer (you can get a simple professional transfer for about $100) I've used this licensed document Prep. company and the owner is a Tugger. - Note, this is my personal recommendation, not as a representative of TUG.

3) Reserve a popular holiday week in 2010 or 2011 for the new owner

Good luck!
